City of Byron company history timeline

1860

William Hays built a store here in 1860, and a post office soon followed.

1865

In 1865, when the Winona St Peter Railroad, now known as the Canadian Pacific Railroad, was being built, it was decided to establish a station ten miles west of Rochester close to a community then known as Bear Grove.

1867

Doctor C.H. Richardson, who later became Byron's first Mayor, built a second store in 1867.

1885

The first school erected within the corporate limits was established in 1885 by Major E.H. Ezell who served as principal and teacher.

1887

In 1887, explorer and miner Byron Wilkes entered our fair valley from the cities of the east with a party of over 60 men, women, and children, who headed for the valley to find gold and build their own fortunes.
