City of Grand Forks ND company history timeline

1881

On February 22, 1881, Grand Forks was officially incorporated as a city.

Central School opened in 1881, followed shortly by Belmont and Wilder schools.

1882

In 1882, the doors of Central School were opened, and shortly after, those of Belmont and Wilder Schools.

1908

Cultural institutions include the North Dakota Museum of Art (on the university campus), the Greater Grand Forks Symphony Orchestra (established 1908), and the North Dakota Ballet Company.

1914

The first doctorate was awarded in 1914.

1950

A Lustron was built in Grand Forks at 602 Lincoln Drive in 1950.

After the flood of 1950, a dike was erected, and temporary dikes were also erected each spring in an attempt to control the river.

1954

A new air force base, which was developed just west of the town in 1954, provided new work opportunities that prompted an influx of thousands of people into the city.

1959

Then, in 1959, Grand Forks’ first shopping mall opened on South Washington Street.

1997

After the Flood of 1997, the city of Grand Forks, in partnership with the North Dakota Division of Emergency Management, the Historical Society of North Dakota, the Grand Forks Historic Commission and FEMA Region VII, preserved the house.
