City of Lawrenceburg history

In 1802 Army Captain Samuel Colville Vance bought the land on which Lawrenceburg now stands and founded a town named for his wife’s maiden name.

Present day Ohio County was then part of Dearborn, and Rising Sun had been founded in 1814.

By 1830, the population of Dearborn County was 14,573, and it was the second biggest county in the state.

In the 1850's, not one but two railroads were built through Dearborn County.

In 1854, an enterprising resident of Moores Hill proposed that a real college be established in the town.

As the drumbeat of opposition to slavery grew louder, it became inevitable that the controversy could not be settled peaceably, and in 1862, southern forces fired on Fort Sumter, setting off one of the country’s bloodiest wars.

New industries arrived, a new power plant was built, and Dearborn County finally got together to build a hospital in the 1950's.

The plant started production in the fall of 2008 and despite a production cut one year later, the plant continues operating today.

The records show the loan was approved on May 14, 2009 with $243,484.61 owed in repayment as of February.

In 2010, Lawrenceburg approved a $400,000 grant award to Greendale's Redevelopment Commission to fund a renovation of a historic home that belongs to Greendale Mayor Doug Hedrick and Greendale town attorney Richard Butler.

In 2011, the city of Lawrenceburg granted a Greendale towing company $150,000 to purchase three two trucks.

The business is now known as “Legacy Machine Works” and a state business record search shows the new name was established as a limited liability company in 2012.
