City of Murray company history timeline

1808

Located in central Eastern Orleans County, the Town of Murray was founded April 8th, 1808.

1809

In 1809, Epaphras Mattison settled in Sandy Creek and established a tavern.

1812

The Town of Murray formed from the larger Town of Northampton in 1812.

1814

The first schoolhouse was built in 1814.

In 1814, the NYS Legislature appropriated funds to improve Ridge Road between the Genesee River and Fort Niagara.

1816

The hamlet of Murray, named for the post office, established in 1816, was originally known as Sandy Creek.

1818

The first settlement was probably in 1818, by David Jones and James Stewart from Caldwell County.

1822

Calloway County, was formed in 1822, the 72nd in the Commonwealth.

1825

The development of the Erie Canal in 1825 led to an economic boom that lasted until the last part of the 19th century.

1826

By 1826 Orleans County had separated from Genesee County.

1828

The Pierce Farm on Route 31 west of Hulberton Road was constructed in 1828.

1829

The hamlet of Hindsburg was founded in 1829 by Jacob Hinds.

1837

By 1837, the other Towns were incorporated separately and the Town of Murray’s current dimensions were set.

1848

A pioneer group called the Mississippi Saints arrived one year later and began to develop a scattered settlement in the south end of the valley in the fall of 1848.

1860

Written history states that at least 20 families were living in the South Cottonwood area in the 1860's.

1869

1870

Established in 1902, the company mined and cut Medina sandstone at nearly 50 quarries throughout Orleans County and shipped it via the Erie Canal and rail.

1911

In 1911, a State law changed the form of government for cities of the First and Second Class in Utah from the old Council form to the Commission form of government.

1913

Hulberton Road Lift Bridge and control tower, constructed in 1913

1950

The original building owned and operated by Bill Rowe, was constructed in the 1950’s and was primarily known as an African-American establishment.

The smelters continued to dominate the local economy until the close of the ASARCO lead smelter in 1950.

From 1950 to the present, Murray's population has continued to expand and prosper.

1981

1983

Times changed, as did the ownership when Skip Chambers, from South Carolina, and Robert Danielson, of New Jersey, bought the business and reopened on April 1, 1983 expanding on the tradition that is The Big Apple Grill and Bar.

1985

The Fancher Road bridge was reconstructed in 1985 and is a non-contributing structure within the National Register Historic District

1990

The present population (31,282 in 1990) is employed in office, service, and industrial jobs throughout Salt Lake Valley.

1994

2001

Originally located just "south" of town in Puryear, Tennessee while Murray was plagued by the Blue Laws that restricted the sale of alcohol, The Big Apple Grill and Bar moved to its current location at 1005 Arcadia Street in October 2001 after liquor by the drink was allowed in the city limits.

On October 2, 2001 after nearly 20 years in Puryear, Tennessee, Chambers and Danielson moved the restaurant to nearby Murray, Kentucky.

2007

In January 2007 Chambers and Danielson retired and sold their portions of the business to Chambers' son and Apple bar manager, Boone Chambers, and long time employee and family friend Kaycee Cooper.
