Nestled in the heart of the beautiful Murphree’s Valley in eastern Blount County, Oneonta became known as a mining community settled for its rich seam of Iron Ore discovered by John Hanby in 1817.
Oneonta began as a railroad depot between Albany and Binghamton which led to its incorporation in 1848.
Railroad shops were built after the arrival of the Albany and Susquehanna Railroad in 1865.
The Railroad Brakeman’s Union was founded in Oneonta in 1883 and it was soon a million members strong.
The State University of New York College at Oneonta originated in 1889 as a normal (teachers’) school, and Hartwick College was founded there in 1797.
Today, Oneonta’s citizens are working to preserve the Oneonta Theater built in 1897.
Hartwick College, originally founded in 1797, as a seminary, joined the education community in 1928.
Founded in 1939, the Greater Oneonta Historical Society, strives to preserve the heritage of the greater Oneonta, NY, area and to educate by offering programs which familiarize residents and friends of the city and town of Oneonta.
The Fairchild Mansion was added to the National Historic Register in 1974 and is now the home of the Masonic Lodge.
The Oneonta Downtown Historical District was established in 2003.
Oneonta has developed to over a total of sixteen square miles and serves an increasing population of approximately 7,000 people according to the 2010 census.
