1825

These three girls, by the terms of the treaty made with their tribe in 1825, were each entitled to a section of land on the north bank of the Kansas River, their special reservations covering the present site of North Topeka and running west up the river.

1830

Probably the first white man that actually settled among the Indians of Shawnee County was Frederick Choteau, who in the year 1830 started a trading post on the west bank of Mission Creek, then American Chief Creek, and about two miles south of the Kansas river.

1835

The first newspaper in Kansas (1835), the Shawnee Sun, was printed in the Shawnee language at the Baptist Mission, 2 miles (3 km) east.

1840

In the spring of 1840, Joseph and Ahcan, with their wives, moved from Missouri onto one of these reservations, and were joined the following year by Louis and wife.

1843

The first jail in Kansas was built in Shawnee in 1843.

1847

The mission was established in the fall of 1847.

1848

During 1848, the Baptist Missionary Society erected a log mission building on Section 32, and in the following year completed one of stone, in size 40x80 feet, near the former.

1852

Sidney W. Smith established his ferry across the Kansas, the southern landing being near the Baptist Mission, in 1852.

1856

Shawnee was the first community founded in Johnson County. It was incorporated in 1856 as Gum Springs and was the first county seat.

1920

The volunteer fire department began to serve the safety and organizational needs of the community after the mid-1920s.

1922

The name was changed in 1922 when the city reincorporated.
