Due to the reputation gained as a summer resort and the prospect of the railroad through town, the town was incorporated during its first year of existence on December 22, 1881, with a population of over 3,000.
The coming of the railroad in 1893 brought an era of sustained growth as a tourist and trade center.
The coming of the railroad in 1897 stepped up the economy of western Benton County.
Growth was interrupted by the Great Depression, but resumed in the 1940's as the city started to become a center for food processing and light industry.
In 1973, amidst the unique beauty of the Ozark Plateau and the park's seventy-seven-foot-high waterfall, scenes for the movie Where the Red Fern Grows were filmed.
