1843

Rochdale Equitable Pioneers SocietyWho were the members of this particular buying club turned cooperative? The members of REPS were part of a group of flannel workers that went on strike in 1843.

1845

The shop was initially open on Monday and Saturday evenings—by early 1845 it was open every evening except Tuesday and Sunday.

1896

The International Co-operative Alliance (ICA) was founded and held its first congress in Manchester in 1896.

1971

North Country Co-op was formed in 1971, a zero-frills storefront lined with bins for its buy-in-bulk membership.

In 1971, North Country Co-op became the first local food cooperative [it grew out of the People’s Pantry, which was located on the back porch of a house in the West Bank neighborhood].

1972

1972: The new corner grocery store? The food cooperative movement not only is represented by the stores, but by a bakery, a warehouse and a mill which regularly grinds wheat, corn and rye and will grind other grains on order.

1973

Willy Street Co-op HistoryThe Williamson Street Grocery Cooperative was formed back in September of 1973, when Common Market (an early food buying club in the neighborhood) moved to the south side of town.

1977

Gallery: 1977: The Wedge Co-op originated in a garden-level apartment on W. Franklin Avenue in Minneapolis, about two blocks from the store's current location.

1977: The collaborative, pitch-in nature of early food co-ops was illustrated in a story on the fledgling Linden Hills Co-op.

In 1977 the Co-op outgrew its space at 1014 Williamson and found a new home at 1202 Williamson Street (where the Social Justice Center is now). Finally having some space to stretch with 1,600 square feet of retail, the store immediately expanded the selection of products available.

1982

1982: Taste hails co-ops as the “general stores of the ’80s.” When you shop at a food co-op, you start down a new avenue in cooking.

1985

The Co-op was able to expand into the other side of the building in 1985, which allowed them to have a deli and sell beer.

1991

1991: More of the above. “Most people’s ideas of co-ops are pretty outmoded,” said Gail Graham, general manager at Seward Co-op. “We’ve spent a great deal of capital on improving storefronts, on new computerized cash registers, better lighting and display.

2014

2014: On the occasion of Lakewinds Food Co-op opening its third location, in Richfield: The Lakewinds expansion is one example of the demand — and success — of the now-40-year-old co-op system.
