1856

Oconee Hill Cemetery Oconee Hill Cemetery is a 100-acre historic cemetery established in 1856 where many prominent Athenians are interred in a park-like setting.

1882

Gospel Pilgrim Cemetery An historic cemetery founded in 1882 by the Gospel Pilgrim Society to fulfill a need for a respected and beautiful place for African-American burials in the Athens area.

History of Athens Transit The development of public transit in Athens since 1885 onwards.

1888

Our company was founded in 1888 with a simple act of kindness.

1893

Clarke County, GA and the City of Athens Written by Charles Morton Strahan and published in 1893, the book records the main facts of the history, development, and then-present status of the county.

1922

The bank is an affiliate under the holding company, Georgia Community Bancorp, Inc which is a Sub Chapter S. Much has changed in banking since 1922, but one thing that remains the same are the community-oriented principles upon which that original bank was founded.

1964

The Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 created and defined community action agencies.

1966

Incorporated in 1966, the Heart of Georgia corporation operated instructional programs designed to ameliorate the poverty conditions of poor families.

1974

Incorporated in 1974, the Middle Georgia Community Action Agency initially served a six county area contiguous to the newly aligned Heart of Georgia area.

1976

Founded in 1976, we’re a leader in payments and financial technology, with a simple mission: Strengthening community financial institutions.

1982

Since that date in 1982 when the two agencies began this cooperative effort, the funding for the Heart of Georgia CAC has grown from $400,000 annually to over $1.4 million.

2013

Dan T. Cathy has been chairman and CEO of Chick-fil-A, Inc., one of America’s largest family-owned businesses, since 2013.

Dan’s father, S. Truett Cathy, was inducted with Herman J. Russell as a Georgia Trustee in 2013.

2014

Athens Oral History Project The Athens Oral History Project was initiated in 2014 to document modern Athens history from the mid-20th century to the present.

2022

Their induction will take place at the Georgia Historical Society’s Trustees Gala on April 30, 2022.

The Office of the Governor and the Georgia Historical Society (GHS) have named Dan Cathy and Shirley Franklin as the 2022 Georgia Trustees, the highest honor the State of Georgia can bestow.
