1941

He completed the first fully functional program-controlled electromechanical digital computer, the Z3, in 1941.

1957

In 1957, Backus became project leader of the IBM FORTRAN project, which became the most popular scientific programming language in history and is still in use today.

1960

First tested in 1960, the system took over American’s reservations four years later.

1970

In 1970, two employees of Management Science America, James Edenfield and Thomas Newberry, established a small Atlanta company called American Computer Systems.

1973

CTSS operated until 1973.

1978

American Software and Computer had been founded a year after American Computer Systems, and in 1978 the two joined forces to become American Software Inc.

1986

In 1986, Fred Brooks published his No Silver Bullet article, arguing that no individual technology or practice would ever make a 10-fold improvement in productivity within 10 years.Debate about silver bullets raged over the following decade.

1987

Thomas, while earning a PhD at the University of Michigan, had created an early version of the program in 1987, and John saw a practical use for it as a special effects staff member at Industrial Light & Magic.

1991

On August 2, 1991, GTE Corporation brought a lawsuit against American Software in the Boston United States District Court, seeking $17.3 million in damages due to what it claimed was "nearly total failure of a multi-million dollar computer software system" designed by American.

Zimmermann posted PGP on the Internet in 1991 where it was available as a free download.

1994

In 1994, the company underwent a reshaping of its corporate structure, installing new officers and expanding its markets.

1995

On August 24th, 1995, Microsoft's Windows 95 operating system was launched with one of the most sweeping media campaigns in the history of computing.

IBM purchased Lotus in 1995.

1996

In September of 1996, American Software reported that it was considering the creation of a new company to handle its supply chain planning solutions.

Another software solution was released by American Software in December of 1996--Resource Chain Voyager.

The United States government, concerned about the strength of PGP, which rivaled some of the best secret codes in use at the time, prosecuted Zimmermann but dropped its investigation in 1996.

Through the Logility subsidiary, established in 1997, American Software offers a comprehensive package which assists retailers, distributors, and manufacturers in coordinating their efforts.

Work on HTML 5 had begun in 2004 under the auspices of the Web Hypertext Application Technology Working Group.

It was developed by Bram Cohen and was initially an open source program, but became closed source in 2005.

The Mac OS X 10.6 ("Snow Leopard") update, released in 2009, completed the Mac's transition from a 32-bit to a 64-bit operating system.

By 2013, over 25 billion songs had been downloaded from the iTunes store.

2014

The Windows XP operating system is released. For example, in 2014, 95% of the world’s automated teller machines ran XP. Microsoft support for XP ended on April 8, 2014.
