1859

Travel back in time 1859 near Titusville, Pennsylvania, the small town where on an August day, America’s first oil-well gusher erupted.

1920

M. Putterman & Company LLC began in 1920 and today is an industry leader in the design and supply of recreational products such as gym floor covers, athletic and industrial windscreens, indoor divider curtains, indoor and outdoor padding, and athletic field covers.

1922

In 1922, UL unveiled its first atmospheric aboveground steel storage tank standard, UL 142 Steel Aboveground Tanks for Flammable and Combustible Liquids.

1925

In 1925, the agency published the first edition of its UL 58 Standard for Steel Underground Tanks for Flammable and Combustible Liquids.

1959

One effort that preceded the debut of the FRP tank was to install the steel tank in a plastic wrap or “baggie”. One major oil company had installed a number of baggie systems in the state of Michigan as early as 1959.

1963

FabOhio, Inc. opened for business in 1963 and continues to operate at the same facility in Uhrichsville, Ohio.

1977

By 1977, most members of the industry had become aware of leaking underground storage tanks.

1979

MPC Containment Systems LLC was formed in 1979 in an effort to expand the business of M. Putterman & Co.

1980

In the early 1980’s, MPC worked in a joint effort with DuPont and several major oil companies to provide a cost-effective solution to the growing need for secondary containment of underground fuel storage systems.

1982

By 1982, many local, state and county officials were addressing the growing problem of leaking underground storage tanks through enactment of regulations.

1986

In 1986, the Steel Tank Institute was the first organization to develop a national sump design standard, known simply enough as STI-86.

1987

A different standard was developed in 1987 to represent this type of composite product.

1988

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 1988 accepted lining as a method to complement corrosion control requirements.

1990

The 1990’s unexpectedly unveiled a completely new trend – extraordinary demand for aboveground storage tanks.

1994

The insulated tank was called FIREGUARD®, the specification for which was published in 1994.

1999

STI’s registration database shows that more than 250,000 sti-P3® tanks have been installed across America through 1999.
