    COLD RIVER CAMP BOOKKEEPER (Part-Time) Cold River Camp is a hiking camp owned by the Appalachian Mountain Club. Founded in 1919, guests enjoy local hikes in Evans Notch and easy access to the Presidentials, North Conway, and the Saco and Androscoggin Rivers. Guests stay in 26 private rustic cabins of various sizes, accommodating 1 to 6 guests. Group bathhouses are located near the cabins. Summer and Extension Season guests have breakfast and dinner in the Conant Lodge and construct their trail lunches for the outing of the day. Walking paths around Camp are ideal for casual exploration and lead to a variety of local hiking options for all levels. Guided hikes run daily and return in time for a dip in the Cold River before dinner. Guests enjoy hiking, swimming, paddling, biking, or just relaxing on the Lodge porch or in the Library with a good book or good company. Evening programs, activities, or board games occur in the evenings. The Rec Hall has a ping-pong table and piano. Off-season private groups rent space in the fall and spring: Chatham Trails Association trail work, AMC chapter outings, weddings, a birding camp, and school groups, while one winterized cabin is open on a self-service basis. The volunteer Committee of Management supports and provides oversight to the Camp. Position Summary Under the direction of the volunteer Committee of Management, Cold River Camp's management structure consists of a summer season manager/co-managers or a manager and assistant manager, extension season co-managers, off-season manager, a wedding and event manager. Camp revenue derives largely from fees paid by campers and is used to operate, maintain, and refurbish the camp. The Bookkeeper works on behalf of the Committee, under the supervision of the Treasurer, to provide part-time, year-round accounting and record-keeping services. Duties include: Maintain and reconcile camp bank accounts Maintain vendor master data and accounts payable Pay bills weekly during summer and as needed during the off-season Keep the Camp's financial statements and related books in good working order and up to date Communicate with managers and Treasurer weekly during the summer and regularly as needed during the off-season Assist summer managers with day-to-day use of the camp accounting system and camper database Work with managers or Treasurer to ensure annual and seasonal licensure and inspections are complete Assist the Treasurer in preparing financial reports Supply the Treasurer with information and documentation as needed for annual and ad hoc financial audits Attend up to three Committee meetings per year when requested by the Committee Chair or Treasurer. The Bookkeeper must conduct work independently and as necessary. The position requires constructive interaction with staff, volunteers, and vendors to obtain information needed to accomplish the job. The role, therefore, requires someone who is self-directed (able to function at a high level without close supervision), trustworthy, detail-oriented, quality-minded, compliant, personable, helpful by nature, and able to solve problems logically and in a timely manner. Special skills required include: Prior experience as a bookkeeper or accountant Strong skillset with accounting software, such as Intuit's QuickBooks General proficiency with spreadsheets and databases as well as electronic communications Experience with point-of-sale credit card processing and administration of merchant services accounts Ability to team with staff and volunteers to accomplish assigned tasks in compliance with established policies and procedures. Camp Hale Counselors Established in 1900, Camp Hale is a sleepaway summer camp for Boston-area youth ages 5 to 17 years old to experience a range of outdoor activities in the scenic environment of Squam Lake, located in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. Camp is located in the lovely and quiet Evans Notch area of the White Mountain National Forest, which remains noncommercial and offers an excellent range of outdoor recreational opportunities. The typical routine for summer guests is to spend a full week at Camp and stay in one of the more than 20 cabins. Breakfasts and dinners are served family style in the main lodge. Central washrooms provide hot and cold running water and electricity. Guests may go on hikes led by official hike leaders and naturalists, or they may plan their own outings. In the evenings activities such as talent shows, square dancing, sing-alongs, ranger talks and slide shows are offered in the recreation hall. A full Camp is about 68 guests. Summer Season (~ 80% of the effort): The manager works on-site for the start-up week and then nine full-service weeks hosting guests. Off season (~ 20% of the effort): Besides hiring/rehiring staff and other early prep work for the summer season, the manager is encouraged to attend Camp Committee meetings (face-to-face biannually, conference calls bimonthly). Cold River Camp and its seasonal staff are supported by a dedicated volunteer committee that provides management and operational oversight. Past managers have been either a husband/wife team as co-managers, sometimes with children, or a single person. The average manager tenure over the last 21 years has been about 8 years - the managers are invested in the mission of the Camp and find it a rewarding experience, and continuity in the position is highly valued. Salary for the manager position commensurate with experience starts at about $13,000 per year. Manager's quarters and board are provided. The manager is entitled to weekly ‘days off' (during which the assistant manager remains in Camp). Primary Responsibilities: Hires, trains, motivates and supervises staff. Prepares specific job descriptions for all staff to be used in hiring and measuring performance. Schedules work. Besides manager, the staff generally includes an assistant manager, experienced chef, prep cook, and an eight-person crew, and sometimes has also included a baker and a maintenance chief. The crew is usually made of up college-age US and international students. Follows all AMC personnel/payroll guidelines. Interacts with guests to make their experience safe and pleasant. Responsible for the overall food service which includes working with the chef and baker in the planning, ordering, budgeting, preparation and serving of meals. Responsible for the overall maintenance of the Camp (buildings, facilities and grounds). Managers are the Committee's "on the ground" representatives to oversee the long-term stewardship of the facility, especially when it comes to infrastructural needs which includes keeping a comprehensive log of all required and completed maintenance for the buildings and facilities. Reflects environmental ethics. Works with volunteers and contractors. Handles finances. Works with Camp treasurer, prepares guest bills, collects fees, performs payroll, maintains petty cash account, keeps books, and helps prepare and control budgets. Keeps necessary inventories at Camp. Works effectively with the entire volunteer support organization as well as the AMC support staff. This includes communication throughout the year, and especially with the Committee, to attend in a timely way to planning and implementation to address Camp maintenance, capital improvement and other needs. Others tasks involving the management and operation of Camp as may be reasonably required by the Chair and the Committee, all in accordance with the seasonal and annual budgets established by the Committee. Including providing interim and final reports (the latter a written report in the fall) to the Cold River Camp Committee Chair and making such recommendations for improvements in Camp policies and procedures as you deem useful. Family-style meals are served in the lodge dining room for breakfast and dinner and a trail lunch is put out fresh each morning for guests to assemble their own lunches to their preference. Guests, who consist of individuals, couples, small friend groups, large and small families, stay for week-long sessions from late June through Labor Day. More information about Cold River camp can be found by visiting **************** or ************************* Summary Description The Prep Cook's main responsibility is to assist the Head Cook (HC) and Assistant Cook (AC) in all aspects of the food service at Cold River Camp. The Prep Cook's position reports directly to the HC, AC, and Manager(s). The Prep cook helps with food deliveries, organization, and maintaining cleanliness of all the kitchen spaces. The Prep cook also helps prepare the lunch table, breakfast and dinner and assists during meal service to ensure timely and accurate meal delivery. The Prep Cook should be able to effectively assume most responsibilities of the AC in their absence to assist in food service and delivery. The work week is typically composed of split shifts that run between 5:30am and 8pm with 2 days off per week coordinated with the other staff. Room and Board are Provided WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING AT AMC Assist in food preparation, baking, and cooking as directed specifically by HC, AC, or management Heavy focus in kitchen cleanliness, maintaining local, state, and federal guidelines Heavy focus on kitchen safety as directed and promoting this throughout the croo Assist in all aspects of food delivery, unloading, and organization of the kitchen Be knowledgeable about responsibilities of the Assistant Cook and effectively assume some of those responsibilities when the Assistant Cook is absent or acting as Head Cook Bring any issues or concerns to the attention of the Head Cook, Assistant Cook, or Manager(s) in a timely manner to minimize any effects on food service/quality. Other duties as assigned by HC, AC or management which will contribute to the overall success of camp operations Qualifications WHAT AMC IS LOOKING FOR Prior food service or kitchen experience Physical ability to carry up to 40 pounds and walk, stand, sit, lift 25 pounds from floor to waist high and to perform all work responsibilities without assistance Meet New Hampshire Health Codes and Standards by always maintaining a clean and organized kitchen, dry-storage, refrigerator, and freezers. Meet updated cleaning and PPE requirements related to COVID-19 Ability to be a team player with a detail-oriented, fast-paced environment Ability to work self-directed at times with an eye to detail Excellent communication skills and the ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds in an inclusive environment First Aid certification, not required but helpful.
