Coolbrands Dairy company history timeline

1985

The company that would become CoolBrands was founded in 1985 by brothers Aaron and Michael Serruya.

1986

With Michael as CEO and Aaron as executive vice-president, Yogen Fruz opened its prototype store at a suburban Toronto shopping mall in August 1986.

1986: Wally moves to Michigan to become Director of Sales and Marketing for Country Fresh, Michigan’s largest dairy at the time.

1987

1987: Wally accepts a new position as Vice President of Sales for General Container, a company that sells packaging, ice cream ingredients, and ice cream flavor concepts.

1989

A younger brother, Simon, joined the company in 1989 at age 18, while their father sold his typesetting business to oversee offices in Europe.

The frozen yogurt dessert shops were soon opening in shopping malls across Canada, and in 1989 Yogen Fruz franchised its 100th store.

1994

With 413 stores, including 15 international outlets and four Café Bresler's quick-service restaurants, Bresler's recorded 1994 sales of $45 million.

1995

The sale was completed in June 1995, and the acquisition of Bresler's provided Yogen Fruz with a means of expansion into United States markets as well as with valuable new brands.

1996

In March 1996 Yogen Fruz completed the acquisition of ICBIY and Brice Foods Ltd. from The Brice Group for $14 million.

In October 1996 the company signed an agreement to franchise the Bresler's Ice Cream brand in Israel, Jordon, Egypt, Lebanon, and the West Bank and Gaza Strip territories.

1997

In October 1997 Yogen Fruz merged with Integrated Brands, Inc. of Ronkonkoma, New York, in a stock transaction.

Distribution of Tropicana frozen fruit juice-based dessert bars began in 1997.

1997: Serruya brothers are named Canada's Young Entrepreneur of the Year.

1998

In February 1998 Yogen Fruz signed an agreement to distribute Bresler's Premium Frozen Yogurt to all 440 Sam' Club stores in the United States.

1999

A May 1999 agreement involved development of 500 stores in Germany over three years.

2000

2000: Company announces name change to CoolBrands International and enters a merger agreement with Eskimo Pie Corp.

2000: Wally Blume, at age 62, mortgages his home and other assets to buy out his two partners.

2001

2001: Wally and June add a sales force to assist in growing the Denali Flavors business, including Neal Glaeser, a seasoned ice cream/novelty and ingredients professional, to lead as president of the company.

2006

2006: Denali Flavors purchases former Cool Brands/Eskimo Pie ingredients manufacturing facility in New Berlin, WI. The facility is renamed Denali Ingredients, which marks Denali’s venture into ingredient manufacturing.

2009

2009: Denali Ingredients invests in a second manufacturing facility in New Berlin, WI, adding new product offerings of cookie dough and other extruded inclusions.

2012

In 2012, Denali Ingredients’ volume reaches 40 million pounds, doubling from the time of purchase just six years prior.

2016

2016: Denali Ingredients unveils another $5.5 million facility expansion and upgrade to Plant #1, the corporate headquarters.

2017

2017: Accommodating overall growth, changing demands in food and food safety, the company invests heavily in additional R&D, quality control, sales, and marketing resources.

2018

2018: Denali purchases a third facility in New Berlin, WI, to accommodate accelerated growth in the extruded doughs and flakes business and prepare for the addition of a baked inclusions capability.

2019

Plant #3 is 96,000 square feet of space and slated to open in 2019.

2021
