D-R SERVICES company history timeline

1969

Additions to a south wing in 1969 provided a new surgical department, newborn nursery and emergency services.

After much discussion with the Maryland State Police, the first medevac transport occurred in 1969 after the opening of the five-story, 32-bed Center for the Study of Trauma.

1970

In the 1970's the hospital merged with nearby Holiday Hospital to form Orlando Regional Medical Center Inc.

In 1970, Doctor Cowley expanded his dream, feeling that not a single patient should be denied the state-of-the-art treatment available at his trauma center in Baltimore.

1971

50 years and Counting In 1971, the Auburn Globe-News celebrated the hospital’s 50 years of service.

1973

Early in 1973 a new three-bed intensive care open and the bed capacity was increased to 90.

In 1973, the Governor issued an executive order establishing the Center for the Study of Trauma as the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medicine.

1975

A $3.2 million improvement program began in 1975 to replace the 90 beds in a new, efficient and more economical building, which more than doubled the space and added 30 new beds for a total of 120.

1980

Further expansion during the 1980's, as well as the addition of community hospitals, led the system to its current name, Orlando Regional Healthcare.

1981

In 1981, a generation after Doctor Phillips acquired his first orange grove on the shores of Sand Lake, Orlando Regional Healthcare entered into an agreement to acquire the land from Doctor Phillips Inc.

1982

Auburn Regional Medical Center was purchased in 1982 by a subsidiary of Universal Health Services, Inc, a large health care management company.

1983

London Health Emergency Founded in the autumn of 1983, London Health Emergency is the country’s biggest and longest-running pressure group in defence of the NHS.

1985

John Hillenmeyer, current president and CEO of Orlando Regional Healthcare, led the design and building of Doctor P. Phillips Hospital, which opened in 1985.

1988

An expansion and renovation of the obstetrical department was launched toward the end of 1988.

1989

An eight-story state-of-the-art trauma center named after Doctor Cowley opened in 1989 and combines the highest level of patient care and teaching with research, leading to advances in therapy for the critically injured.

1991

And it was his pioneering work in open-heart surgery, in trauma and emergency medical services system development for which he was remembered and praised following his death on October 27, 1991.

1992

A BMA survey showed that an overwhelming majority of GPs would now like to be relieved of the 24 hour contract and in 1992 the BMA began a campaign to get rid of the contractual obligation which made GPs themselves responsible for organising & providing a round the clock service.

1996

1996 GP Out of Hours Cooperatives

1998

Now the County Health Department, Public Health Services, is a division of the Health and Human Services Agency, which was formed in 1998.

2000

The Carson Report published in 2000 proposed some stringent quality standards and made it clear that these should apply not only to organisations such as deputising services and OOH cooperatives but equally to individual GPs & practices providing their own cover.

2002

In October 2002, Auburn Regional added a 107,300 square-foot, four- story patient tower on the corner of North Division and First Street in Auburn, at the approximate cost of $16 million.

2004

1 Prior to 2004 GPs were working to a 90 year old contract clause which made them personally responsible for providing round the clock services

2006

2008

Construction has already begun, and bed tower is expected to be completed by Summer, 2008.

2010

In 2010, Auburn Regional opened a new Medical Office Building that houses a number of other specialty services including our Sleep Disorders Center.

2012

MultiCare: Back to Community Care In 2012 Tacoma-based MultiCare Health System purchased Auburn Regional Medical Center from Universal Health Services.

2021
