DAVIS IRON WORKS company history timeline

1855

By the year 1855, James was established as an iron founder in Marlowes, with a family of one son, William Nash, and three daughters, Elizabeth, Matilda and Emma.

1870

By 1886, the business was known as Davis and Lane. It is believed that the foundry was burnt down at an early stage of its history, probably before 1870, and then later rebuilt.

1871

The business developed quickly in the field of agricultural implements and William travelled extensively as a representative of Davis and Son, until his untimely death in 1871, at the age of 27.

1876

Archaeological digs have taken place sporadically at Falling Creek since 1876 when the Smithsonian Institute was the first to move a trowel in the area.

Part of his duties included taking the mail he collected over to the old 1876 post office that was next door to the historic Shelby Inn that tragically burned down last year.

1914

1945

Though she wasn’t born in Bensley, Norma Corbin has been involved with the goings-on in this stretch of the county since 1945.

His favorite story to tell goes back to when he was 6 years old and began helping his dad deliver mail in his 1945 jeep.

1960

Starting around 1960, the area surrounding Falling Creek underwent change.

The tiny post office that still stands today was active until 1960, he said.

1991

As the president of the Falling Creek Ironworks Foundation, Corbin and her small nonprofit have worked since 1991 to raise the profile of one of the county’s most historic sites.

1995

Even before it was acquired by the county in 1995 to form Falling Creek Ironworks Park, this site just south of Chippenham Parkway and a few hundred yards west of the James River was a draw to area residents.
