The Designer II will perform conceptual and detailed design services for various substation engineering projects, with moderate supervision. This position will work within a staff of engineers, designers, and specialists on a wide variety of engineering design tasks, from the request for project estimation through construction and record update.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Perform substation design tasks, develop design drawings and documents, prepare material lists, perform field reviews, and other tasks for projects.
Prepare substation related drawings such as one lines, plan views, electrical assemblies, structural details, foundation details, electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and other engineering drawings.
Apply all relevant client, national, and state standards when applicable.
Perform calculations, reports, and designs on substation projects to support engineers.
Understand client standards and complete projects by performing simple to moderately complex tasks, exercising judgment in design criteria, evaluation, and design.
Collaborate with engineers and designers across disciplines and work to identify and resolve potential design issues.
Contribute to a safe environment for substation personnel, contractors, and the public.
Education, Skills, and Abilities Required
An Associate Degree in Engineering Technology (or equivalent) and 2 to 4 years of experience, or 5 to 10 years of prior relevant experience in utility substation engineering.
Understanding of the utility grid (power generation, transmission, and distribution) system.
Ability to read and understand documents such as policy manuals, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Maintains confidentiality and uses discretion with business information.
Self-motivated, ability to work independently as well as in a team environment, reliable, trustworthy, as well as technically competent.
Demonstrated time management skills.
Proven AutoCAD or MicroStation skills.
Experience using Microsoft Office based applications.

Summary/Objective:
The Fire Protection Sprinkler Foreman is responsible for the day-to-day activities of assigned personnel on the assembly, installation and repair of pipes, fittings, and fixtures for fire protection sprinkler systems. In addition to supervisory responsibility, this position is that of a working Fire Protection Sprinkler Foreman, responsible for directly performing a wide range of skilled fire protection construction tasks.
Essential Functions:
* The Fire Protection Sprinkler Foreman manage labor and materials to ensure the assigned tasks meet or beat budgets for each
* Tracks hours and manpower on all tasks
* Provides training in areas needing improvements to ensure quality, production, and safety
* Responsible for performing a wide range of skilled construction tasks
* Attends, as needed, all job site and office meetings related to assigned projects
* Interprets company policy for workers and enforces safety regulations
* Provides guidance and direction to crews in meeting budgets and project schedule
* Ability to manage the fire protection installation team, including sprinkler fitters and helpers on the job site
* Ability to interpret blueprints and architectural drawings
* Responsible for installation of wet, cpvc, and steel systems in commercial and industrial buildings
* Plans work to make the most efficient use of assigned manpower and other resources
* Inspects work in progress and completed work to ensure conformance to contract and specification
* Maintains appropriate documentation for the work performed
* Demonstrate positive team work and ability to be a team leader and mentor
* Maintains a clean and safe work environment
* Completes projects in a timely manner while providing the highest standard of quality work and customer satisfaction
* Performs other duties as assigned
Supervisory Responsibility: Yes
Required:
* 3+ years of experience in Fire Sprinkler Installation field; or equivalent combination of vocational training and experience
* 1+ years of experience as a Fire Protection Sprinkler Foreman running crews on heavy commercial construction projects
* Knowledgeable with NFPA 13 and all codes
* Proven ability to effectively manage and lead teams of 8 to 10 individuals, ensuring high productivity, team cohesion, and successful project outcomes
* Must be able to multi-task, work with minimal supervision, follow written and oral instructions, show attention to detail, and demonstrate problem-solving skills
* Must adhere to all company policy and procedures
* Must be available, and have the means to report to multiple job sites as assigned

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1) Create, revise and maintain engineering and record drawings, and sketches.
2) Support the creation, revision, and maintenance of facilities and equipment documents; including but not limited to construction, equipment, property documents and records.
3) Obtain information required to perform work from verbal communication, sketches, marked drawings, listings, field notes, vendors' catalogs and technical reference manuals and site visits.
4) Perform mathematical calculations required to accomplish assigned work.
5) Proficiency in the use of computer aided design software. Autodesk products - AutoCAD Electrical, Civil3D, Inventor, Vault.
6) Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office software.
7) Read vendors' prints, shop and other drawings and equipment operating instructions, and incorporate that information into the work being performed.
8) Demonstrate ethical behavior as outlined in the AEP corporate policies.
9) Assume other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
* Must have completed at least one year working toward associate degree in applied science (AAS) drafting and computer aided design (CAD) or in civil, structural, electrical or mechanical engineering technology or design, or relevant equivalent experience and/or education.
* Must be at least 18 years old.
* Graduation date of December 2026 or later.
* GPA of 3.0 or higher.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Physical demand level is Sedentary. Must be familiar with conventional drafting symbols and drafting methods and can distinguish colors.
