1936: The Dobson Telephone Company is founded.
In the late 1940’s they converted the system to a common battery system, so that simply by picking up the receiver a customer could reach the switchboard, without a turn of the crank.
Telephone operations became his primary occupation in 1941 when the couple purchased the telephone company in Panama, Oklahoma.
Lynn Dobson, the founder of the Dobson Pipe Organ Builders, was born in Carroll, Iowa, in 1949.
Then, in 1951, the first dial system in LeFlore County was installed in Panama.
After several “Fresh Starts” and many career success’s, Clyde decided he was ready for a change, so in 1957 they returned to the Arkansas/Oklahoma area and purchased the Lavaca Telephone Company in Lavaca, Arkansas from Mr.
He attended school in nearby Glidden, Iowa; in 1966, he attended the Minneapolis School of Art summer session for gifted students on a Hill Foundation Scholarship.
He attended Wayne State College in Wayne, Nebraska, graduating in 1971 with majors in Art and Industrial Education.
In November, 1974, Lynn Dobson established his own firm in Lake City, Iowa.
However, the desire to be involved with organbuilding persisted, and 1974 he worked briefly for the Hendrickson Organ Company of St Peter, Minnesota.
1980: Everett Dobson joins the family-owned company.
The first, a 7 stop practice organ for St Olaf College, would be joined in 1985 by its more famous sibling, a 33 stop organ in Studio A, the firm’s first three-manual instrument.
When Garlick moved in 1986, he sold the organ to Mary Brooks of Doylestown, Pennsylvania.
1989: Dobson Cellular Systems is formed.
Through Dobson Cellular Systems, the company commenced wireless operations in 1990.
A significant step on this path was the construction in 1992 of a large two manual organ for St Luke’s Episcopal Church in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
In March 1996, the company paid $30 million to acquire cellular operations in Kansas and Missouri.
In 1998 she in turn sold it to The Church of the Holy Spirit in Harleysville, Pennsylvania.
Though not in unexplored territory for the firm, the 1998 organ at St Paul’s Episcopal Church in Minneapolis unabashedly combines Classical and Romantic elements in a fresh and original way.
In 1998, Dobson Communications achieved great strides on the acquisition front.
Operating revenue by the end of 2000 reached $475 million, more than three times the volume recorded two years earlier.
2000: Dobson Communications and AT&T Wireless Services, Inc. form a joint venture to acquire American Cellular Corp.
In late 2001, Dobson Communications revealed plans to sell a portion of the company to Verizon Wireless Inc., the nation's leading wireless operator.
In 2002, NPI's 38,000 subscribers enabled the company to generate $20 million in revenue.
In August 2003, Dobson Communications became the sole owner of American Cellular.
By early 2004, Dobson Communications owned wireless operations in 16 states, operating in markets that were populated by 10.6 million people.
