1873

Sidney Reilly, born as Sigmund Georgievich Rosenblum in Russia in 1873, is said to inspire Ian Fleming for his character James Bond.

1912

Before his remarkable espionage career, Pujol, a Barcelona native born in 1912, cycled through a series of occupations, including failed chicken farmer, owner of an unsuccessful movie theater and manager of a rundown hotel.

The son of an Englishman who was an explorer and writer, Philby was born in India in 1912 and educated at elite schools in Britain.

1941

In 1941, he began working in the British atomic bomb project and shortly thereafter, for the Soviet military intelligence agency GRU. Two years later, he went to the United States and joined the team of scientists working in the Manhattan Project.

In 1941, Skarbek was arrested by the Gestapo but was soon released.

1942

Meanwhile, he continued to offer to spy for the British, who in the spring of 1942 finally agreed to let him work as an operative and brought him to England, where he was given the code name Garbo because he was such a good actor.

In 1942, he fled from occupied France to Britain and joined the Special Operations Executive (SOE) which sent him back to France to arrange secret aircraft landings and transportation of the SOE agents.

1943

In 1943 a young official from the German foreign ministry contacted Allen Dulles, an OSS officer in Switzerland who would later head the Central Intelligence Agency.

1946

He was arrested in 1946 but was acquitted two years later.

1949

After the war, Pujol moved to Venezuela, but in 1949 British authorities seeking to protect him from possible Nazi retribution told his ex-wife and children that he’d died of malaria in Africa.

In 1949, the Americans began suspecting him of espionage.

1950

As a young man, Donaldson, who was born in Belfast in 1950, joined the Irish Republican Army (IRA) and fought against British rule in Northern Ireland.

Fuchs who returned to Britain after the end of the war initially denied passing information to the Soviets but in 1950, he confessed that he was a spy.

1951

In 1951, two of his friends and fellow British operatives defected to Moscow after Philby warned them they were about to be exposed as double agents.

1953

Following his release in 1953, Blake returned to Britain as a hero but also as a double agent.

1956

In the wake of the scandal, Philby resigned from MI6; however, the agency later rehired him and in 1956 sent him to Beirut, where as a cover he again worked as a journalist.

1961

In 1961, Blake’s espionage activities were exposed and he was sentenced to 42 years in prison.

1963

In 1963,Kim was revealed to be the part of Cambridge five(it is the spy ring of five men who passed information about Britain in world war two to ussr it is believed that Kim philby was the most successful). He worked in almost all the countries in the world and bluffed the British intelligence

1966

After the end of the war, Hall joined the CIA and worked as an intelligence agent until 1966 when she retired.

1977

1980

In 1980, after Hanssen’s wife reportedly caught him with some suspicious-looking papers, he admitted to selling secrets to the Soviets but claimed the information he’d handed over was worthless.

1984

However, decades later a British historian tracked down Pujol, still in Venezuela, and in 1984, the 40th anniversary of D-Day, the public learned he was still alive.

When Mikhail Gorbachev visited Britain in 1984, Gordievsky was secretly briefing both sides: with the guidance of MI6, he was telling the Russians what to say to the British, and simultaneously warning the British what the Soviet delegation would say to them.

1985

May 1985, Gordievsky was summoned back to Moscow, supposedly to be anointed as KGB chief in London.

In 1985, though, he resumed spying for the Soviets, this time for the KGB, while continuing to rise through the FBI’s ranks.

1988

He died there in 1988 and received a funeral with a KGB honor guard as well as other tributes including his own postage stamp.

1991

In 1991, with the Soviet Union dissolving, Hanssen stopped spying out of fear he’d be found out.

2002

In 2002, police in Belfast arrested Donaldson and accused him of being part of a Sinn Fein spy ring at the Northern Ireland parliament building, Stormont, where he served as Sinn Fein’s senior administrator.

2006

In 2009, a splinter group called the Real IRA claimed responsibility for Donaldson’s murder, but no charges have been filed in the case. It was there in April 2006 that he was found tortured and shot dead.
