The Peabody’s story as one of the grandest, most historic hotels in downtown Memphis dates back to 1869 when the original Peabody Hotel opened on the corner of Main & Monroe, immediately becoming the social and business hub of Memphis.

Opened in 1890 as a gambling house, eatery and saloon, M&M serves up terrific food and is a stellar location for watching the United States Women’s Soccer team win the World Cup.

Gevurtz specifically envisioned developing a grand hotel that would cater to the many new travelers arriving in Portland after its Lewis and Clark Expedition centennial in 1905.

The first hotel in Las Vegas, Hotel Nevada (now Golden Gate Las Vegas), was founded the next year in 1906.

Construction began on The Hermitage Hotel in 1908.

On grand opening night—September 17, 1910—The Hermitage Hotel filled with the luminaries of the Nashville community, who dined while enjoying music from an orchestra brought in from the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel.

Originally constructed to house one of the state’s most prominent financial institutions at the time, the Union National Bank, the building was erected in 1911 by renowned architectural firm Mauran, Russell & Crowell.

Dating back to 1912, the hotel was originally the creation of businessperson Phillip Gevurtz.

The women’s suffrage movement reached is successful conclusion in 1920 when The Hermitage Hotel was the national headquarters for both pro- and anti-suffrage causes, while the state legislators cast their votes that brought about the ratification of the 19th Amendment.

Built in 1924, Hotel Finlen in Butte, Montana is one of those grand hotels that has retained the ambiance of its heyday when it first opened to impress Butte’s elite and important travelers.

1926: One of the first celebrity guests to visit the Multnomah Hotel was Queen Marie of Romania.

Two important developments in 1931 paved the way for Las Vegas to become what it is today.

And when the dam started producing cheap electricity in 1936, Las Vegas was a benefactor.

The city’s population gradually grew from a respectable 8,400 in 1940 to triple that amount by the end of the decade.

The El Rancho Vegas opened on April 3, 1941.

Guy McAfee, a kingpin of illegal gambling in Los Angeles, moved to Vegas after a crackdown in LA led to raids and closings. It was McAfee who first dubbed the stretch “the Strip.” In 1946 he opened the Golden Nugget, a large casino that was decorated to transport customers back to the heady days of the California Gold Rush.

Seeing that independent artists were being signed in Nashville, the major record labels determined they needed a Nashville office as well, thus helping to cast the die in the formation of an early Music City. It became America’s top selling record in 1947 and made Mr.

In 1951, a filet mignon dinner and Frank Sinatra concert at the Desert Inn cost a whopping $6.25.

1957: Elvis Presley reserved a suite at the Multnomah Hotel and wound up attracting a massive crowd of excited fans.

Since The Edgewater opened in 1962, a long list of musicians has called it home.

A famous visit by the Beatles in 1964 launched the hotel into notoriety as a favorite Seattle destination among musicians that continues to this day.

The group was founded in 1965 and operates numerous resorts in destinations such as Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, United Kingdom, South Korea, and the United States.

A turn of events began in 1966.

But in 1967, he bought a small stake in a Las Vegas hotel and moved his young family west.

The 1969 corporate gaming law made it possible for corporations to operate gambling establishments in Las Vegas.

The company that brought The Peabody back to life when they purchased the hotel in 1975 is Belz Enterprises, a highly successful, multifaceted real estate development and management firm based in Memphis, Tennessee.

1985: The United States Department of the Interior listed the erstwhile Multnomah Hotel in the United States National Register of Historic Places.

His battered body was found buried in an Indiana cornfield in 1986.

Wynn put his money where his mouth was, opening The Mirage in 1989.

In March 1995, a celebration marking the 75th anniversary of women's suffrage was held at the hotel.

In 1998, Frank Zappa released his compilation album called Cheap Thrills.

In the year 2000, Historic Hotel of Nashville acquired the hotel, which by then was operating under the Westin Hotels flag.

In 2004, this historic landmark was restored and transformed into Hotel ICON. The building retained its distinguished Bedford limestone and brick facade while sporting a lustrous new interior created by the San Francisco-based design firm, Candra Scott and Anderson.

In 2011, they bought Fremont Street classic Fitzgerald's casino, remaking it as the D Las Vegas.

After the Stevens brothers bought the Las Vegas Club in 2015, Derek Stevens said he started knocking on the doors of their neighbors.

2016: The Embassy Suites Hilton Portland Downtown was inducted into Historic Hotels of America.
