1867

EDUCATION, UNITED STATES OFFICE OF. The United States Office of Education was established by Congress on 2 March 1867 as a division within the cabinet-level Department of Health, Education, and Welfare.

1869

The name of the division changed to the Office of Education in 1869 when it was placed in the Department of the Interior.

1893

As such, the design Hornbostel used closely resembled that of the Columbian Exposition in 1893, “where higher ideals and serious scholarship were believed to be best expressed in the classical idiom.”

1896

In 1896 the department added to its annual reports on education in the United States and other countries bulletins and studies of educational developments.

1908

Construction of the New York State Education Building began in 1908 by the firm R.T. Ford and Company of Rochester, NY. The building costs at the time amounted to nearly $4 million and covered everything from the purchase of the land to construction of the building.

1911

Founded in 1911, the St Olaf Education Department has been dedicated to preparing effective teachers who possess exemplary knowledge in academic content and pedagogy.

1912

However, when the building opened in 1912, the fourth floor was dedicated to house many of the collections of the New York State Museum including collections in geology, mineralogy, paleontology, entomology, archeology, botany and zoology.

1965

ALYSON KLEIN: Many of them were started in 1965 with the passage of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, which was part of Lyndon Johnson's Great Society program.

1972

The independent National Institute of Education, established in 1972 within the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, assumed the research functions of the office.
