1828

Aspdin established a plant in Wakefield to manufacture portland cement, some of which was used in 1828 in the construction of the Thames River Tunnel.

1845

The first portland cement made in the United States was manufactured in 1871 at a plant in Coplaly, Pennsylvania.

1915

The first colored concrete was created by L.M. Scofield in 1915.

1930

In 1930, air entraining agents were used for the first time in concrete to resist against damage from freezing and thawing.

1935

In 1935, the construction of Hoover Dam involved pouring 3.25 million yards of concrete, with another 1.1 million used for related dam structures.

1936

1936 – Hoover Dam – largest-scale concrete project ever completed at the time

Completed in 1936 to hold back the mighty Colorado River, the dam is made of 3.25 million cubic yards of concrete, with an additional 1.11 million used for its power plant and surrounding structures.

1938

John Crossfield got a patent for concrete overlay in 1938, and he used it to create a covering for ship decks that used Portland cement, latex, and other ingredients.

1950

Brad Bowman developed the Bomanite process, the original cast-in-place, colored, textured and imprinted architectural concrete paving, in the middle 1950's in Monterey, California.

1963

1963 – Assembly Hall @ University of Illinois – first concrete sports dome

The first concrete domed sports arena, known as the Assembly Hall, was built at the University of Illinois in 1963.

1999

In 1999, HTC introduced concrete polishing to the US. The first installation of concrete polishing was a 40,000 square-foot floor in the Bellagio Resort and Casino, one of Las Vegas’ most luxurious and world-renowned venues.
