**Position Summary:**
As a Registered Nurse in our ED, you are responsible and accountable for delivering direct and indirect patient care in the Emergency Room (ER) setting. You will also:

THE POSITION
This is a non-sworn, non-safety, at will position. Firefighter-Paramedic Recruits undergo an 18-week fire academy and may undergo additional departmental training designed to provide an overview of the fire service, training in various regulations and procedures, firefighting techniques, first aid, physical fitness, and other related duties. Firefighter-Paramedic Recruits are assigned to a 40-hour work week schedule.
This recruit position is designated as "at-will", serving at the pleasure of the appointing authority, and subject to discharge without cause and without right of appeal.
Subsequent appointment as a sworn Firefighter Paramedic-Trainee is based on overall Academy performance, evaluations, and the availability of positions. Upon appointment, Firefighter Paramedic-Trainees are assigned to a 56-hour work week schedule and serve a 12-month probationary period from the date of appointment. If an employee successfully completes probation as a Firefighter-Paramedic Trainee, the employee is "flexibly-staffed" to Firefighter-Paramedic.
Firefighter-Paramedic Recruit (salary: $5,241/month): This is an "at-will" position, serving at the pleasure of the appointing authority, and subject to discharge without cause and without right of appeal. Successful applicants undergo an 18-week fire academy and departmental training program which covers fire service, regulations and procedures, firefighting techniques, physical fitness, and other related duties. Job Summary:
Transports, and administers basic life support treatment, to sick or injured persons in the pre-hospital and inter-facility settings, as authorized by the local EMS Agency Medical Director, by performing the following duties, within the prescribed scope of practice and all applicable regulatory guidelines for pre-hospital care:
Essential Functions:
Responds to instructions from emergencymedical dispatcher and drives the specially equipped emergency vehicle to specified locations and hospitals. Monitors communication equipment to maintain contact with the dispatcher.
Determines nature and extent of illness or injury, or magnitude of catastrophe, to establish basic life support procedures to be followed or need for additional assistance, basing decisions on statements of persons involved, examination of victim or victims, and knowledge of emergencymedical practice.
Removes or assists in removal of victims from vehicles, or the scene of an accident or catastrophe, and assists in the transfer of victims to receiving facilities. Assists in controlling crowds, protecting valuables, or performing other duties at scene of an accident or catastrophe.
Takes and records patient's vital signs, including blood pressure, pulse, and respiratory rate. Administers prescribed treatment at the site of an emergency, or in specially equipped vehicles, performing such activities as first aid, immobilization of injuries, application of splints, administration of oxygen, treatment of minor wounds or abrasions, or administration of basic life support procedures.
Assists admitting and billing personnel to obtain and record information related to the patient's vital statistics and to establish the necessity for medical transportation.
Maintains vehicles, medical and communication equipment and replenishes equipment and supplies. Completes field care report patient billing /trip ticket and daily driver's unit checkout form.
Participates in Quality Improvement activities including chart audits, peer reviews and focused studies.
Participates in continuing education activities as a student, instructor, and proctor.
Participate in Safety and Risk training and activities.
Serves as a company representative promoting positive customer relationships through proactive involvement in public business and community activities.

perform skin tests, immunizations, phlebotomy and the initiation of peripheral venous access.
observe and assess signs and symptoms of illness, reactions to medications/treatments, general behavior, and/or general physical condition to determine normal versus abnormal characteristics and initiate emergency procedures when indicated.
plan and implement individualized patient care based on observations. Implements appropriate reporting, referrals and care in accordance with standardized procedures while providing care to special patient populations and patients with diverse cultural backgrounds.
identify patients' readiness for learning and their ability to follow directions/instructions and give consent while identifying and assessing patient safety concerns with respect to age and developmental considerations.
demonstrate the knowledge and the ability to identify and make special adjustments as required to the specific populations' needs, including cultural, spiritual, age, psychosocial, communication, gender, sexual orientation, economic, education, family and condition needs.

Educational Requirements:
Graduate of an accredited nursing program. BSN preferred.
License/Certification/Registration Requirements:
Valid California Registered Nurse License
American Red Cross or American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications.
EDAP or ENPC required within first year of employment
TNCC or ATCN required within first year of employment
For RN III: National Specialty certification (i.e. CEN) required.
Experience:
Minimum 3 years recent acute RN experience in specialty. Note: (minimum 1 year recent acute RN experience will be considered for Registered Nurse II)
Working knowledge of applicable standards of practice.
Demonstrated dedication to customer service and ability to meet the needs and expectations of patients and health care colleagues.
