Purpose This is an entry level position with a focus on learning the basic principles of silviculture and applied intensive forestry as practiced by Roseburg. This is a field-oriented position with office work limited to project planning/management. The workload is usually assigned by the Forester III or Area Forestry Manager.
Key Responsibilities
* Independently plan, implement and administer assigned projects
* Use and further develop working knowledge of herbicides, their modes of action, and field application techniques to execute field work
* Use and further develop knowledge of brush species common in our operating area to execute a brush control plan as assigned
* Develop a working understanding of state rules and regulations pertaining to forest practices and reporting procedures governing operations
* Assist in preparing bid packages for project work, solicit and review bids and make recommendations for contract awards
* Prepare contracts and bid summaries for management approval
* Administer and inspect contractor work for compliance with contract specifications for various silvicultural activities including but not limited to; tree planting, pre-commercial thinning, vegetation management, and animal damage control
* Perform inventory cruising independent field work to RRC specifications
* Accurately cruise all assigned timber sales for Procurement department
* Perform harvest unit layout including riparian buffers and road design to RRC specifications
* Conduct stocking surveys and become proficient in identifying and developing vegetation management and restocking prescriptions
* Secure an Oregon Private Pesticide Applicators License within 6 months and maintain license through continuing education
* Become qualified at the LRB level for wildfire suppression in conjunction with agency partners
* Generate GIS work maps for field work
* Assist other foresters with slash burning and become familiar with burn permitting procedures and regulations as they relate to smoke management and air quality control
* Independently recognize and solve complex issues in the assigned work package
* Continuously gain knowledge and skills as informed by the assigned development plan
* Maintain good relationships with the public and neighbors at all times
* Represent the Company positively in all interactions with agencies and industry cooperators
* Interact directly with state agencies, as necessary, to move projects forward

Required Qualifications
* Bachelor's degree in Forestry or Natural Resources, with 6-12 months related forestry field experience (summer/internship experience qualifies) or minimum 2 years of forestry field experience.

* Ability to work alone and navigate in the woods using maps and/or aerial photos
* Proficient in the safe use of 4X4 trucks on steep terrain and on varied road surfaces
* Competency with Microsoft Office products and experience with GIS

Assist IPP staff as needed by reviewing IU Self-Monitoring Report (SMR) compliance, data input, and identifying potential violations. Interface with Wastewater Treatment Plant operations staff on permitted IU discharge permits, discharge sampling, and lab reports. Maintain records according to Industrial Pretreatment Program regulations and City procedures; Assist with industrial user inspections and reporting; Assist the Pretreatment Coordinator in implementing and administering IPP procedures.
As time permits, actively participate in Western States FOG Alliance subcommittees and participate in training opportunities. Advocate for the city when discussing policy, procedural, and regulatory changes that will impact Gresham

IN THIS ROLE YOU WILL:
Perform field explorations and collect data related to assessment, investigation, and remediation activities.
Maintain accurate records of field observations, data collection activities, and laboratory analyses.
Research, analyze, evaluate, and interpret environmental data obtained during field investigations under supervision.
Document field conditions, write field reports, and participate in report production.
Coordinate and manage field work for drilling; soil, sediment, groundwater, stormwater, and/or soil vapor sampling; as well as soil and borehole logging.
Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements through accurate reporting, ongoing monitoring of activities, and maintaining comprehensive records.
May participate in project management tasks such as project budgeting and proposal writing.
May handle small projects or assist with tasks on larger projects to develop project management skills.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. Typical ways to obtain the required knowledge and abilities include:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in environmental science, hydrogeology, geology, engineering, Master's preferred

Ability to obtain 40-hr OSHA HAZWOPER certification (paid by GSI)

The work performed is conducted primarily in a professional office environment and requires the use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and copiers.
While performing the duties of the job, you will frequently be required to sit, talk, and hear. Visual acuity sufficient to view documents and computer screens, with or without correction, is required. Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb short distances, balance and stoop, kneel and crouch.
Fieldwork activities may involve lifting and carrying equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, bending, stooping, and walking over uneven terrain.
Fieldwork activities may include exposure to various environmental conditions, including but not limited to: inclement weather, extreme temperatures, rugged terrain, and/or potential exposure to hazardous materials. Personal protective equipment (PPE) will be provided and required for field activities to ensure safety and compliance with OSHA standards.
Travel to project sites, client meetings, and regulatory agencies as needed. Travel frequency will vary depending on project locations and requirements but, in general, will comprise approximately 30-50% of work time. Project areas are generally local, or within an approximately a two to three-hour drive.
Overnight stay may be required at the expense of GSI.
