Key Roles & Responsibilities
Responds to an emergent and non-emergent calls, assesses the situation, diagnoses and treats patients for emergency needs
Reports patient information to medical staff in a timely and accurate manner
Obtains a basic medical history and physical examination of the patient, and assesses the situation's urgency and seriousness
Provides emergency care at the scene and during transit to the hospital
Utilizes necessary medical equipment to treat the patient and ascertains the extent of their injuries or illness
Communicates with the medical care facility about the patient's condition, status and time of arrival
May be requested to provide patient care in the hospital setting performing tasks delegated by the RN based on the scope of the individual's training and capabilities.
Licensure/Certification Qualifications:
State licensure/certification as an EmergencyMedicalTechnician or higher in the appropriate state of practice
NIMS 100, 200, 700; Over 75, need to have medical permission
BLS (Basic Life Support) within one month of hire
Must meet the driving requirements and criteria acceptable to Essentia Health's insurer
Current (valid) US/State Driver's License
State background check must provide clearance to work with vulnerable adults

Communicate with dispatchers or treatment center personnel to provide information about the situation, to arrange transfer of patients/residents, report patient/resident information to medical staff in a timely and accurate manner, or to receive instructions for further treatment.
Ensure the ambulance is clean and washed and kept in a neat orderly condition. After each call, restock and replace used linens, blankets and other supplies, cleans all equipment following appropriate disinfecting procedures, checks of all equipment so that the ambulance is ready for the next run and maintains ambulance in efficient operating condition.
Physical activities include, but not limited to, considerable use of arms and legs and moving of whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping and handling materials.
Successfully complete at state approved EmergencyMedicalTechnician (EMT) course that meets or exceeds the National Emergency Services Education Standards. Attend continuing education and training classes to maintain current certifications and/or licensure. Keep abreast of new developments in the field, or maintain existing knowledge.
In a Hospital based setting, EMTs under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) will assist in performing patient/resident care services and support activities of the patient/resident care unit. Demonstrate an understanding of the Emergency Department throughout flow and anticipate workflow. Multi-skilled in order to provide expanded bedside services. Knowledge of and utilize appropriate age-related patient/resident care protocols relating to the physical and psychological needs of all ages of patients/residents. Interact with patients/residents to build rapport or provide emotional support. Ability to work with growth and development needs of a diverse population. Observe, record, and report to physician the patient's/resident's vital signs, measures input and output; collects non-invasive specimens; performs simple diagnostic tests and obtains urine specimens and records all data collected in the medical record. Responsible for preparing equipment during basic examinations, diagnostic procedures, and treatments using aseptic techniques.
Knowledge of medical terminology and medical equipment/supplies and helps maintain equipment, orders supplies, and cleans and restocks the treatment areas. Ability to safely assist with the transfer of patients/residents to and from procedural areas including but not limited to Radiology and other areas. Ability to communicate directly with physicians, nursing staff, patients/residents, and patient/resident families and is responsible to report changes in the patient's/resident's condition. Knowledge and be able to perform high quality basic life support (BLS) and be able to apply and use a LUCAS device. Prepare and position stable patients/residents during transport.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent required. Completion of an accredited Training Program required for licensing.
Must have a thorough knowledge of emergencymedicaltechnician (EMT) principles, practices and techniques, knowledge of how various equipment such as a monitor or defibrillator work and how to troubleshoot problems that may arise.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required and depending upon location, national registry status as an EmergencyMedicalTechnician (EMT) level may be required. Depending on state requirements, individuals may need to have a state license. National Incident Management System (NIMS) ICS100, 200, and 700 completed, and continuing education hours as mandated by accreditation. Additional training, provided workshops, or staff meetings attended as per policy. Must possess a valid Driver's License and have a good driving record. Must be 18 years or older, approval needed for those under 21 to drive. May not be required for those in a Hospital setting. **Education Qualifications:**
As an Emergency Department Technician, you are responsible for providing direct care to patients and serving the needs of patients in a manner conducive to their safety and comfort, under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, Nurse Manager, Assistant Head Nurse, and/or Department Director to contribute to meeting the mission and goals of Essentia Health.
**Duties will include but are not limited to:**
+ CPR
+ Wound care including irrigation and dressing
+ Splinting and immobilization of bone injuries
+ Suctioning of patients
+ Performing EKG's
+ POC testing
+ Obtaining non-invasive specimen swabs such as throat cultures
+ Crutch fitting
+ Ambulation education
+ Suture removal
+ Transporting of patients between departments
+ Providing personal hygiene care
+ Assisting with nutritional needs
+ Providing comfort care and other assistance
+ Appropriately and safely transferring patients
+ Taking vital signs and completing record keeping
+ Recognizing and promptly reporting changes in patient condition to the RN
+ Maintaining a safe, clean environment for patients to promote the healing process.
**This position will work the following:**
+ 48 hours per pay period
+ Every Other Weekend
+ Evening Shift: 3:00PM - 11:30PM
**Licensure/Certification Qualifications:**
+ Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification (Must obtain within 1 month of hire)
**Must meet ONE of the following:**
+ Completion of an emergencymedicaltechnician, licensed practical nurse, certified medical assistant or nursing assistant program.
+ Currently licensed as a EMT, NA, LPN, CMA upon initial hire
+ BSN student who has completed at least 3 years of schooling
+ Currently employee in the SJMC Emergency Department as an Emergency Room Technician
