1800

But this began to change after 1800, as the turnpikes were built.

1806

In 1806 Newark Township was split into wards; called Newark, Orange, and Bloomfield.

1870

Census figures in 1870 showed that 143,839 people lived in the county, with 105,000 of them in Newark.

1875

In 1875, John F. Dryden founded the Prudential Insurance Company in Newark.

1890

All this business activity in Newark led to a demand for nearby housing, and in the 1890's the communities surrounding Newark began to assume their role as suburbs.

1900

By 1900, more than two-thirds of the county's population still lived in Newark.

1996

Countywide, total real property values now exceed $36 billion with an annual growth in 1996 of $78 million.

1997

With the opening in 1997 of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, Essex will rival New York City as a cultural center for music and dance showcasing the nation’s and the world’s best artists.
