In 1919, the nursery was incorporated into the Jewish Alliance of Los Angeles, a communal residential facility for low-salaried, employed women.

Having outgrown its previous building, the Hamburger Family financed a new residence in 1928, named Hamburger Home, to memorialize Asher and Hannah Hamburger, early founders of the May Company.

By 1940, these services were the core of The Family Service Organization’s work.

Founded in 1943 by volunteers who helped find adoptive homes for children orphaned during WWII, F&CS is one of Nashville’s oldest and most venerated nonprofits.

To meet the changing needs of the community, in 1966 the Board of Directors changed the organization’s mission to provide a therapeutic residence and services for adolescent girls with behavioral and emotional problems.

Increasingly, systems of care are concerned about "treatment efficacy," ensuring effective therapeutic interactions between practitioners and children in care and their families (Pires, 2002) and system reform.

Today, Family & Children’s Place continues to operate HANDS for all of Jefferson County. It was so successful that by 2003, the Cabinet for Health and Family Services adopted it for all 120 counties in Kentucky.

While at Oasis, he was awarded a scholarship from the Center for Non-Profit Management and obtained an MBA from Vanderbilt’s Owen School of Business in 2009.

Michael became President & CEO of F&CS in 2011.

Carly joined the F&CS team in May 2017.

She has also been a longtime volunteer, board member and chair, and generous supporter of F&CS. The center was officially dedicated in June 2019 [link to News].
