Ferari Llc company history timeline

1898

Born in Modena, Italy in 1898, Enzo Ferrari started out as a race car driver.

1909

Founded in 1909 by Cavaliere Ugo Stella, Alfa manufactured a line of automobiles and sponsored cars for the racing circuit.

1919

In one of these bars Ferrari met Ugo Sivocci, a test driver for a new automobile manufacturer named Costruzioni Meccaniche Nazionalia (CMN). Sivocci hired Ferrari as his assistant and the young man competed in his first race in October 1919.

1923

In 1923 he won the Chilometro Lanciato at Geneva, the Circuito del Polesine at Robigo, and the annual race at Ravenna.

1924

He became an Alfa Romeo works driver in 1924 but just five years later set up the Scuderia Ferrari at Viale Trieste in Modena to allow its mostly gentleman driver members compete.

In 1924 he won the Pescara, run on the Adriatic coast.

1925

By the end of 1925, Ferrari had expanded his holdings into a large dealership and service center.

The death in 1925 of popular Antonio Ascari, Alfa Romeo's premier driver, led the company to cancel all racing competition out of respect for the fallen employee.

1927

By 1927 he was behind the wheel of a racing car once again, and he won the Modena race and the Circuito di Alessandria that year.

1928

In 1928 Ferrari repeated as champion in both of these races.

1931

In 1931, Enzo finished in second place at the Circuito Tre Province, which would be his last time competing as a driver.

1933

1933- The reputation of Scuderia Ferrari grew quickly and they soon became the technical racing department for Alfa Romeo in 1933.

1938

In 1938, Ferrari was appointed head of Alfa Corse.

1939

However, he left in 1939 to start up Auto Avio Costruzioni in the Scuderia’s old headquarters.

1940

The car also took part in the 1940 Mille Miglia.

1940: Enzo Ferrari ends his association with Scuderia Ferrari and establishes Auto Avio Costruzione, which was initially involved in making aircraft engines.

1943

In late 1943, Ferrari moved Auto Avio Costruzioni’s workshops from Modena to Maranello.

1945

In 1945, Ferrari introduced a V12 engine which became one of its signatures.

1947

In March 1947, the prototype 125 took its initial test drive, and later in the year entered and won the Circuito del Valentino in Turin before the wealthy and elite of Italian society.

Franco Cortese drove the car in its maiden race at the Piacenza Circuit on May 11 1947 and again to its first victory in the Rome Grand Prix at the Terme di Caracalla circuit on the 25th of the same month.

The company officially launched in 1947.

The company’s story officially began in 1947 when the first Ferrari emerged from the historic factory entrance on Via Abetone Inferiore in Maranello.

1948

By the summer of 1948, Ferrari's automobile designers had completed work on a nonracing car.

1956

In 1956, tragedy struck when Enzo’s eldest son Dino died of muscular dystrophy.

1957

Honoring the agreement, the company name wasn’t changed to Auto Costruzioni Ferrari until 1957, and first car to bare the name Ferrari was released the Ferrari 125 S.

1960

1960: Company is restructured as a public company and incorporated under the name Società Esercizio Fabbriche Automobili e Corse Ferrari--SEFAC S.p.A. Early 1960s:Ford agrees to purchase the company but the deal falls apart.

1961

First, in 1961, members of the company including chief engineers Carlo Chiti and Giotto Bizzarrini left and went on to form another auto company called ATS. They had intended for it to be a direct competitor with Ferrari at the time.

1965

In 1965, meanwhile, the company changed its name to Ferrari S.p.A. Esercizio Fabbriche Automobili e Corse.

1966

The Ford GT40 left a very strong mark on the reign of Ferrari when the GT40 Mark IIs finished first, second and third at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1966.

1969

In 1969, it found one in the Fiat Group, which bought a 50% stake in the business.

1970

By 1970, under the new Fiat management, production of Ferrari passenger cars had increased to more than 1,000, and by the end of the decade production had reached 2,000.

1973

In 1973, production began of cars powered by the first rear-mounted V8 engines which proved hugely commercially successful.

1989

1989: Company is renamed Ferrari S.p.A.

1992

1992: Luca Cordero di Montezemolo is hired to head Ferrari, and launches massive overhaul.

1997

1997: Fiat sells 50 percent stake in Maserati to Ferrari, which gains management control over Maserati.

1998

The Maserati factory in Modena was refurbished, all the assembly line workers were either replaced or retrained, and a new model, the 3200 GT coupe, was introduced in November 1998 to critical acclaim.

1999

In November 1999 Ferrari acquired the 50 percent of Maserati stock it did not own already, gaining full ownership.

2000

In April 2000 the company announced that it had entered into alliances with Marsh & McLennan, a United States insurance and consulting firm, to offer insurance to new car buyers, and with Fidis, the financial arm of Fiat, to launch retail financial services.

2001

A key to this growth was the planned reintroduction of the Maserati into the United States market, with a new two-seat convertible called the Spyder slated to debut in 2001.

2002

2002-10- Over these eight years, Fiat sold and bought back a large percentage of stake in the company.

2005

Production of 2,000 cars was projected to increase to 10,000 per year by 2005.

2014

2014- October of 2014, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles announced that they planned to separate from Ferarri, which they owned 90% of.

2015

In 2015, Ferrari's IPO on the New York Stock Exchange valued the company at nearly $10 billion.

2016

2016- January 3, 2016, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and Ferrari announced that the separation of the two companies had been completed and Ferrari began trading on the Mercato Telematico Azionario on January 4, 2016.

2018

In 2018, Ferrari delivered more than 9,250 cars, up 10% over the previous year.
