1989

In June 1989, Avon became the first major cosmetics company in the world to announce a permanent end to animal testing of its products, including testing done in outside laboratories.

1990

The 1990’s brought incredible discoveries in the skincare world, many of which are used by skincare companies today (including Cirem Cosmetics!). The roles of Vitamins A, C, E and B were discovered to help premature aging.

1999

1999:The first ever Cosmetics Harmonization and International Cooperation (CHIC) meeting is held in Brussels, Belgium.

2004

2004:The European Union (EU) implements an animal testing ban on finished cosmetics products.

2006

2006:The CTFA develops the Consumer Commitment Code, which highlights the voluntary, proactive, and responsible approach to product safety supported by cosmetics companies.

2010

In Ming Dynasty China, women in the Emperor’s Court used a blend of honey and ground orange seeds to keep their skin fresh and blemish-free (Altman, 2010).

2010:PCPC commissions a study to help quantify the important contributions the cosmetics industry makes to the economy and society.

2012

A study was undertaken in 2012 in the Garden of Gethsemane just outside of Jerusalem to try to carbon date the extremely old olive trees that grow there.

2013

One study undertaken in 2013 found that olive oil might actually not be as good for the skin as previously thought.

2015

2015:Due to rising concerns about the potential environmental impacts, the cosmetics industry supports the enactment of the Microbead-Free Waters Act, which prohibits the manufacture and sale of rinse-off cosmetics (including toothpaste) that contain intentionally-added plastic microbeads.

2017

2017: CIR completes the scientific safety assessments of 5,278 ingredients since the program began.

2021
