Forsyth County Schools company history timeline

1873

Our school district’s history started in 1873 when "old field schools," log buildings with dirt floors built in cleared fields, were consolidated into one public district.

1961

Forsyth School was founded in 1961 as a small preschool in a house leased from the Unity Christ Church on Forsyth Boulevard.

1964

1964 The College adopts a new name, Forsyth Technical Institute

1965

The core of Forsyth’s unique campus is comprised of six historic homes, acquired one at a time over five decades since 1965.

1970

The school expanded by one grade level each year and graduated its first sixth-grade class in 1970.

1974

1974 The College Foundation is created to work with alumni to raise funds for buildings, programs and scholarships

1977

Dunbar House was acquired in 1977 for Grades 2–6.

1982

Also in 1982, the Main Office was relocated to Dunbar House, where it remains today.

1987

1987 The School acquires its current name, Forsyth Technical Community College

1992

1992 Allman Center is created, with more classrooms and administrative space

1998

1998 Two new off-campus centers are added: the Mazie S. Woodruff Center in Northeast Winston-Salem and the Grady P. Swisher Center in Kernersville

2004

Falcon Field and the Williams Walled Garden were built in 2004.

2006

Enrollment grew with the campus and reached nearly 400 students in 2006/07.

2007

The Rebecca Glenn Playgrounds opened in 2007.

2008

2008 The school opens a third off-campus building, the Northwest Forsyth Center in King, housing specialized training facilities for the Criminal Justice, Fire Protection and Emergency Medical Science programs.

2010

As the nation’s 6th fastest growing county from 2010-20, Forsyth County’s growth and increasing diversity have had a positive impact on our schools.

2015

Fillmore House was fully renovated in 2015.

2016

Connect NC Bond Act of 2016

2017

Following Mike Vachow's departure, the Forsyth School Board of Trustees announced the appointment of Timothy Burns as the Interim Head of School for the 2017/18 school year.

2020

Dan Hildebrand led Forsyth through the global COVID-19 pandemic of 2020/21, reaccreditation with the Independent Schools Association of the Central States (ISACS), and the adoption of a new mission, vision, and values through a strategic planning process.

The stand-alone Science Center adjacent to Fillmore House was transformed into the Falcon’s Nest in 2020 for the Eyas Program.

2021

Operational (M&O) As the 6th largest out of 180 school districts in Georgia, for 2021-22 FCS operates on a $520 million budget, with 72% of expenses tied to instruction.
