Fort Myers Police Department history
Fort Myers Police Department company history timeline
The Fort Myers Fire Department was formed in May 1901, following a series of large fires in the downtown area.
Realizing that bucket-brigades were no match for large fires, the department bought its 1st fire engine, a used button-hand pumper in August 1901.
The engine was put to its first real test in 1914, as the Lee County Packing House and the steam ship Thomas A. Edison were destroyed by fire.
In 1972, the city was tasked by the state to start a pilot program that would eventually mold the Fort Myers Fire Academy.
The institute was enlisted by Fort Myers Police Chief Derrick Diggs to study the department after an audit in February 2017 found the department was incapable of solving most homicides and that it lacked resources.
