The municipality was formed and incorporated by an act of legislation on February 28, 1844.
They are the Clarksburg Episcopal Methodist Church that was built in 1845 and now owned by the Township.
Manalapan Township was officially formed on March 9, 1848 when leading citizens met in Phebe Perrine’s tavern in Englishtown.
The population of the township according to the census of 1850 was 1,910.
With the completion of the railroad lines through Freehold in 1852, merchants and farmers were able to ship their goods to New York and Newark markets.
Beers 1873 Atlas of Monmouth County lists 28 business.
The offices of the Township were established in Englishtown and remained there until 1888.
Two distinct cultural environments had evolved in Freehold by the turn of the century, one a bustling commercial town and the other centered on an agricultural economy. As a result, in 1919, the Borough of Freehold formally separated from the Township, yet remained a center of activity for much of the surrounding area.
The second is the Clarksburg four-room schoolhouse that was built in 1923 and presently is the new home for all the municipal offices.
Great growth occurred between 1960 and the present day when developers bought farms and built houses.
The first book, “Manalapan in Three Centuries” was written by James S. Brown in 1991.
