She first traveled to the United States with her sister in 1819 to tour the northeast.
In 1825, Miss Frances Wright, a social reformer from Dundee, Scotland, purchased 2,000 acres of land (where Germantown is today) on both sides of the Wolf River.
The first settlers arrived in Germantown about 1825.
In the winter of 1825, her utopia was the hot new theory for social change, but it remained untested.
Not only were ideals being compromised, by the end of 1827, profits were also abysmal.
By 1830, the first store was opened as more settlers moved into the area.
The name Germantown was first used in 1836.
The town was incorporated in 1841.
Passenger and freight service came to the town in 1852 via the Memphis & Charleston Railroad, providing accessibility to area goods and services within the region.
The area was incorporated in the Nashville City Limits in 1865.
Development in Germantown begun in 1972.
The completion of the sewer line in 1974, development in Germantown increased significantly.
To prove her case, Wright looked to Tennessee where abolitionist sentiments were strong and a tract of land spanning the Wolf River she described as, “2000 acres of good and pleasant woodland, traversed by a good and lovely stream.”
Since then, it has grown by nearly 2,000 people per year, and had approximately 95,000 people in 2010.
