    Part-time Description This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Lifeguard at the Plattsburgh YMCA creates a safe and positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals while promoting and maintain safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck and surrounding areas in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Maintains active surveillance of the pool area. Responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Completes related reports as required. Responds to challenges with possible solutions in a timely manner. Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area. Remains calm and objective when under pressure or when challenged by others. Performs all secondary duties in a timely manner as required for each shift. Performs all lifeguard duties, including ability to lift people out of pool, perform CPR and scanning the pool to ensure safety of participants. Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state health department code. Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed. Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving and for the duration of the shift. Performs chemical testing, as required, and takes appropriate action. Attends Staff meetings and trainings as scheduled. Requirements QUALIFICATIONS: Prefer lifeguards 18 years of age and older; minimum age of 15. Lifeguards under 16 years of age cannot lifeguard alone. Certifications: American Red Cross Lifeguard or equivalent (must include CPR/AED, First Aid) Ability to maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Perform a Lifeguard Skills test during the interview process; includes endurance, a timed event, and demonstration of CPR and lifeguard rescue skills. The Lifeguard is responsible for member satisfaction and retention. To achieve patron safety the lifeguard must provide accident prevention through safety checks, rule enforcement, and proper guarding techniques, and emergency management including proper water rescue, CPR, and first aid procedures. The lifeguard must assure safety by constantly monitoring the pool using constant scanning techniques to achieve a 10x10 reaction time. Responsibilities/Duties/Functions/Tasks: The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to the following: Follow NYS Health Department Bather Code: · Never leave the pool unattended. · Always be positioned in appropriate space, opposite side and spread out. · Never perform personal functions while on duty: phone calls, writing, reading, swimming talking to friends, over talking with other guards, sleeping, etc. At any time there is no one in the pool, clean the pool environment or straighten up the equipment. · Maintain current certifications. · Maintain current certifications and a proper level of physical fitness. · Required onboarding and monthly in-service trainings, to include a minimum 300 yard swim and perform a rescue. Maintain a safe environment: · Maintain safe swimming conditions in the pool, on deck and surrounding areas. Prevents accidents by maintaining constant observation of the pool area, enforcing health and safety rules, and maintaining emergency readiness. · Respond to incidents, accidents and emergencies appropriately, in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures and in a calm and professional manner. · Protect the organization and patrons from harm or suit. · Walk around the deck or if applicable rotate with other guards every 15 minutes. · Follow pool rules on and off duty. · Frequently familiarize yourself with certifying agency's text and your Aquatic Manual. · Administer proper first aid in accordance with training and facility procedures. Maintain a pleasant and professional aquatic environment: · Wear a uniform consisting of: staff shirt, one piece bathing suit, whistle, fanny pack, staff ID, pocket mask, and rescue tube and have rescue equipment on and ready for rescue at all times. · Dispose of all materials (trash, hair, etc.) found on the pool floor. · Keep the pool deck clear of toy's (barbells, noodles, etc.). · Maintains effective relationships with members, participants and other staff, develops rapport with member. · Greet every member and/or patron with a smile and a friendly “Hello.” · Attempt to get to know members in friendly and professional manner. · Arrive on deck 15 minutes before your shift. · Record and report any faulty equipment and/or lapse in maintenance to Aquatic management. · Report emergency maintenance needs immediately to Aquatic management. · Be familiar with all information and answer questions about programs, schedules, policies or direct patrons to Aquatic management. · Depending on the pool, prepare pool for incoming programs. · Work with fellow staff members and treat them with respect. Maintain Records: · Record all incidents and accidents immediately after situation has been resolved and you will not be distracted from guarding the pool (report emergencies immediately to Aquatic management). · Record the number of members using the pool on the member usage or daily attendance sheets. · Properly test and record chlorine in pool at the appropriate time. · If applicable, turn in all Open shift reports, End of shift reports and shift change reports. · Complete accident reports. Demonstrate vigilant scanning, 180 degrees, every 10 seconds checking the bottom, middle and top of their zone including a downward sweep * Follow Association policies and procedures regarding the safety, health and welfare of members, program participants, guests and staff * Understand and perform rescues and emergency procedures, document accidents on the proper forms and communicate to the Aquatic Director or designee as outlined in the EAP in a timely manner in accordance with aquatic, facility, certification policies and requirements * Maintain accurate record of hours worked and be responsible for finding substitutes for absences * Engage in positive public relations with participants, members and guest ensuring a positive experience * Adhere to the Association operating policies and procedures by operating the programs within the guidelines set forth as well as swim test procedures * May be asked to assist a certified swim lesson instructor with class instruction as directed by the Aquatics Director or designee * Attend and actively participate in all trainings, staff meetings/in-services and guard drills as assigned * Perform all other duties as assigned Safety and Risk Management * Adhere to all Federal, State, and local safety regulations, as well as all YMCA policies and procedures related to the safety, health, and welfare of members, participants, guests, and staff. * Ensure that all Tampa YMCA standards, leading practices, and policies are implemented and consistently followed, including those related to emergency procedures, child abuse prevention, and appropriate supervision. * Adhere to policies and procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising participants and boundaries with participants when applicable. * Ensure implementation of and follows all training requirements including risk management and child abuse prevention training in addition to ensuring proper reporting of all incidents/accidents according to risk management procedures. * Maintain a safe and healthy environment at all times, including performing daily safety checks of program areas, equipment, and supplies. * Maintain proper records, including certifications, meetings and trainings. * Maintain an emphasis on safety in all areas of responsibility as they relate to members and staff. Education/Experience Required: * Must be at least 15 years of age * If 15 years old you must work with 18+ year old lifeguard unless there is an Aquatic Director and/or Full-Time Pool Manager on site during entire shift * Proficient in the water as determined by passing a swim test * Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with groups and/or individuals from different backgrounds * Represent the YMCA in a positive manner Certifications/Trainings Required: * Must possess and maintain current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification including Oxygen.
