The Dotter Department of Interventional Radiology serves as a beacon of both internationally recognized research and locally delivered advanced clinical care. The Dotter Department of Interventional Radiology is a part of the OHSU School of Medicine, with its own admitting service and clinic. The Frank Lab at OHSU is seeking to recruit a ResearchAssistant 2 (RA 2) to conduct research on leveraging chemical probes to interrogate cannabinoid signaling processes in the brain. Specifically, the RA 2 will be part of an interdisciplinary team studying cannabinoid signaling processes in cultured neurons and brain reward circuits. This NIDA-funded project utilizes cell culture, electrophysiology, and fluorescence experiments to make new discoveries.
The ideal candidate for this position will have an advanced degree in neuroscience, physiology, chemical biology, or related field, and possess undergraduate-level knowledge of organic chemistry. A parttime (2-15 hours per week) Research Data Analyst - ideally someone trained/experienced in statistical genetics and/or computational biology/neuroscience - is being recruited for a VA Portland Healthcare System (VAPORHCS)-based research team that examines the genetics, genomics, and genetic epidemiology of neurological disease (i.e., epilepsy, stroke and traumatic brain injury) using data from the VA's Million Veteran Program (MVP) genetic research database.
The incumbent will possess independent problem-solving skills, a high level of reliability and self-motivation, established organizational skills (including genetic database searching and data management), computer coding experience (e.g. Python, R, SQL, PLINK) excellent interpersonal communication skills, and the ability to work in a complex and multidisciplinary national research team.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Perform phenotyping analysis of healthcare data from adults with epilepsy, stroke, traumatic brain injury (TBI) including deep clinical phenotyping of individuals based on electronic health record (EHR) and survey data using Human Phenotype Ontology (HPO) terminology and NIH's Common Data Elements (CDEs); statistical/computational phenotyping via utilization and validation of healthcare administrative algorithms and machine-learning models; and systematic databasing of phenotypic data.
Perform genetic/genomic analysis of genotyping data (i.e. microarray and whole genome sequencing [WGS] results) from adults with epilepsy, stroke, TBI including: analyzing genetic information to determine the risk levels for specific genetic conditions; genotype-phenotype correlations; determining if genetic variants could be responsible for phenotypes via genetic database-based research (e.g., ClinVar, OMIM, Varisome, etc.); and systematically databasing genetic data.
Recordkeeping, data organization and data management (e.g., study records, data entry into databases, data checking and cleaning, data harmonization, data summary, data analysis, and data graphing) on secure virtual platforms behind the VA firewall.
Study team member responsibilities: regular research team meeting attendance; dissemination of study results in the form of writing/editing/preparing abstracts, posters, and manuscripts; writing grant applications; and participation in conferences and professional associations to upgrade skills and learn about new developments in genetics, genomics, and genetic epidemiology.
JOB DUTIES
Technical duties (specific to those listed above) include phenotype-genotype correlation studies, electronic health record-based research methods, genetic database searching and management, statistical and/or bioinformatic analysis techniques, applying machine-learning algorithms to healthcare data, and a clinical understanding of neurological disease and gene-environment interactions.

Additional duties include sample collection, data entry, and reporting of observations to supervisors. Assistant will contribute to general lab support duties, including cleaning, stocking and maintenance of laboratory supplies and equipment.
Technical Research
Preparation and collection of blood, urine, feces, hair, lymph node, bone marrow, mucosal swabs, and other samples within the scope of infectious disease research.
Shipping and handling of animal tissues to various support laboratories.

Per the National Science Foundation: Participating postdoctoral associates supported with NSF funds in RTG must be citizens, nationals, or permanent residents of the United States or its territories and possessions. An NSF-funded Research and Training Group (RTG) in Computation- And Data-Enabled Science (CADES) at Portland State University (PSU) will produce unique workforce additions possessing deep knowledge in specific areas of computational mathematics and statistics, as well as a broad understanding of current issues in data-driven science. The CADES group effort is divided into three areas: (Area I) numerical techniques for partial differential operators, (Area II) data-intensive statistical learning, and (Area III) optimization methods for data science. In addition to foundational issues in computational mathematics, examples of applied research directions include light propagation through optical devices, forecasting of weather, air quality, and drought, understanding progression of diseases like cancer and dementia, and multifacility location problems for warehouse and wireless services. All projects involve high performance computing and open-source scientific software products.
Currently, we are seeking postdoctoral candidates interested in working in our team RTG environment. Candidates whose doctoral research experience intersects with at least one of Areas I, II, III, and who are desirous of acquiring skills in the remaining areas, are sought. NSF requires all RTG postdocs to be US citizens, nationals, or permanent residents.
In the CADES program, trainees develop skills not solely for academia, but also for research careers in industry and government labs. This RTG specifically aims to produce researchers A. trained in both mathematical and statistical techniques requiring advanced computational tools, B. exposed to both disciplinary advances and real-world data, and C. able to communicate both mathematically and in application-specific language. To this end, innovative training structures, seldom found in mathematics departments, are now being built at the Fariborz Maseeh Department of Mathematics & Statistics for RTG postdocs and students.
The department has previously leveraged large philanthropic investments to successfully recruit leading scholars in computational science. It offers growth opportunities in a nurturing atmosphere where senior faculty are invested in collaborative group building and mentoring. The department is housed in a newly renovated LEED-certified modern facility in downtown Portland, well-connected by rail, streetcar, and bus lines. The Portland area, home to numerous software and hardware companies in the high-tech sector, offers a thriving, progressive, urban scene, in close proximity to stunning nature.
