1980

They turned instead to making small corporate investments, beginning in 1980 with a 3.5 percent stake in GAMI. Specifically alluring to Zell and Lurie was GAMI's $110 million tax loss carry forwards.

1983

GAMI's percentage of capital funded by debt climbed from 24 percent in 1983 to 92 percent after the Jepson and Amerace deals.

1984

In 1984, Zell privately--that is, with no involvement from GAMI--gained control of another failing firm called Itel.

1985

In December 1985, Robert Lurie joined GAMI's management as a director.

1988

During 1988 Zell's Itel company purchased a 17 percent stake in Santa Fe Southern Pacific, a large railroad holding company.

1990

Only 48 years old, Lurie died of cancer in June 1990.

1995

In April 1995, AFC combined with American Premier Underwriters to form a larger, stronger and more diverse, publicly traded organization: American Financial Group, Inc. (NYSE: AFG).

1999

Great American adopted a new corporate logo that featured a traditional American eagle in the time-honored colors of red, white and blue, in 1999.

2003

In 2003, AFG chose to narrow the company’s focus and divested ownership of its personal lines insurance holdings.

2008

The graph above shows that prior to the 2008 real estate crash, stocks were still earning substantially higher annual returns than real estate investments.

2011

In January 2011, the company became the tenant of a distinct new office building in downtown Cincinnati - Great American Insurance Group Tower at Queen City Square.

2015

Most recently, Great American Insurance Company opened a branch office in Singapore in 2015.

2018

AFG assets are on a GAAP basis as of December 31, 2018.

Fixed income investments comprise an industry average of 79% of invested assets according to SNL Financial—Life/Health US Version 2018 as of December 31, 2018.

2019

He is an avid sports enthusiast and relocated back to Denver, where he was born and raised, from Newport Beach in December of 2019.
