Here is the mission statement published in the very first issue of The Atlantic, in November 1857, and signed by many of the greats of American letters, including Ralph Waldo Emerson, Herman Melville, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Nathaniel Hawthorne:
In 1869 The Atlantic Monthly created a sensation when it published an article by Harriet Beecher Stowe about Lord Byron and his salacious personal life.
Mortimer Zuckerman bought the magazine in 1980, but, despite his efforts, the publication continued to struggle.
In 1993 he enrolled at Howard University, but he left without a degree.
In 1999 he sold it to David G. Bradley, owner of the National Journal Group.
The critically acclaimed work was followed by Between the World and Me (2015), which became a best seller.
The first installment was published in 2016.
In addition, Coates served on the faculty at several schools, notably joining Howard University in 2021.
