Job Overview:
The Government Relations team is seeking an intern for Summer 2026. The selected intern will be an integral part of a Government Relations team who develops and manages the company's public policy, regulatory and community relations efforts. This includes coordinating with internal stakeholders both assessing governmental risks and opportunities and determining the company's position on key policy issues. The Team:
The National Political Advocacy Department (NPAD) works to strengthen the efforts of the ACLU at the federal, state, and local levels of government. The department harnesses the political power that comes from having more than eight million members and supporters, as well as affiliates in every state. By organizing grassroots lobbying and issue campaigns using modern tactics, the ACLU seeks to achieve change as profound in the legislative, administrative and electoral arenas as it has accomplished through the courts. The Liberty Policy & Government Affairs team is made up of seven members who work with Congress, state legislatures, regulatory agencies and others to strengthen and protect LGBTQ+ rights, reproductive freedom, women's rights, and disability rights.
What You'll Do:
This internship is designed to provide interns with the opportunity to learn about public interest work, explore personal research opportunities, and engage in policy advocacy and public writing for issues on reproductive freedom. Given the scope of the Liberty Policy and Government Affairs team, the intern may also receive assignments on emerging needs, such as transgender justice and disability rights.
Your Day to Day
Conducting research on issues related to reproductive freedom
Preparing, producing and developing advocacy materials
Attending meetings to gain firsthand knowledge of active cases and advocacy projects
Monitoring legal and legislative developments in state legislatures and in Congress, as well as regulatory and administrative actions by the Trump administration as it relates to reproductive freedom
Legal research and writing projects on developing federal and state legislative and executive trends impacting reproductive freedom

Starting Salary: $44,000 - $51,300 a year

Qualifications
Education/Knowledge/Skills:
Graduate students pursuing a masters degree and undergraduate students in their junior year or senior year working towards a social science degree or a degree in a related field. Our most successful interns have strong writing, analytical, and qualitative and quantitative research skills. Interns must have a demonstrated interest in public policy and social justice issues either in their coursework or past intern or work experiences. Strong PowerPoint and written and oral communication skills are required. Experience with Excel and/or STATA/R preferred.

Responsibilities
Students will have an opportunity to learn a variety of research skills such as data collection, editing, and general research support. Major projects will include fact-checking and helping to maintain Vital Statistics on Congress, data coding for a project relating to the presidency and the Federal Reserve, and data collection for legislative gridlock series. Students will be assisting the work of Senior Fellows Molly Reynolds and Sarah Binder.
Other research topics that may be covered include, but are not limited to: Congress and congressional procedure; political polarization; reforming government; data management and processing techniques; data science and visualization principles.
Qualifications
Education/Knowledge/Skills:
Undergraduate students in their junior or senior year and graduate students (pursuing a masters degree) working towards a degree in public policy, political science, or related fields are encouraged to apply. The Center on Military and Political Power is looking for part-time or full-time interns. CMPP is a center at FDD that promotes understanding of the defense strategies, policies, and capabilities necessary to deter and defeat threats to the freedom, security, and prosperity of Americans and our allies by providing rigorous, timely, and relevant research and analysis. Interns will work closely with CMPP Senior Director Bradley Bowman on a variety of projects related to U.S. defense strategy and policy. Qualified candidates will have a demonstrated record of excellence, including strong research and writing skills. Additional information on CMPP may be found here.
Eligibility
Must have at least a 3.2 GPA (on a 4.0 scale).
Should have a relevant course of study and have completed coursework in any of the following fields: International Relations, Security Studies, History, Communications, Journalism, International Economics, Political Science. Computer science, and/or a relevant STEM field of study.
Interns should have knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, including Word, as well as basic Excel skills.
Must be able to commit to a minimum of 22 hours per week.
Must be eligible to work in the United States.
