Harrisonburg VA company history timeline

1849

Trustees governed the City of Harrisonburg until 1849 when a new charter instituted a mayor-council form of government and Isaac Hardesty was elected the City’s first mayor.

By 1849, the town had over 200 taxpaying residents.

1862

On June 20, 1862 the fence around the courthouse was used as a stockade to hold Union soldiers taken prisoner in the Battle of Cross Keys.

1884

Seven years later, the railroad was completed between Washington, D.C., and Harrisonburg, which became the focal point for the poultry industry, and saw the development of one of the nation's first incubators in Rockingham County in 1884.

1908

The Virginia General Assembly established the State Normal and Industrial School for Women at Harrisonburg in 1908.

1917

What would become Eastern Mennonite University (EMU) was founded in 1917 as the Eastern Mennonite School.

1920

Four years later, the 1920 census recorded the population of Harrisonburg as 5,875.

1994

In 1994, RMH added a regional cancer center to its list of services to the community.

2000

Efforts toward the revitalization of downtown Harrisonburg went into high gear in the early 2000’s.
