1842 - John Fremont & Kit Carson camped south of Hastings on an exploratory mission.
1871 - First home was built in Hastings by Walter Micklen.
Hastings owes its existence to the railroads, which joined here in 1872.
1874 - Hastings became an incorporated community on April 20th.
LIBERAL HALL: In 1879 Liberal Hall was the place of the Print Olive trial.
1882 - Hastings College opened for its first classes.
In 1886, the residents of Hastings voted to establish a municipally-owned water supply.
1888 - Hastings State Hospital was established.
The second service to be provided was sanitary sewer which began in 1890.
Electricity, initially only for street lighting, was first provided in 1899.
In 1942, the local gas distribution network was purchased from a private concern.
In the 1950's, the natural gas department was brought under the auspices of the other three utility services and Hastings Utilities was formed.
Today, wastewater treatment is provided at the Pollution Control Center which began its operation in 1982.
