Founded in 1977, William P. Hawkins and Sally Hawkins established Hawkins Associates, Inc.
By 1979 Hawkins had regional offices in Central North Island, Auckland, Taranaki, Wellington and Christchurch.
In 1984, Will Hawkins established the company, “Hawkins and Associates," working as a one man operation out of his home in Strongsville, Ohio.
To respond more effectively to the changing demands of the construction industry Hawkins established its head office in Auckland in 1988.
1989: Repeat business drives triple-digit annual growth.
1991: Staff Care® is established to meet the temporary (locum tenens) needs of Merritt Hawkins & Associates' clients.
1993: Merritt Hawkins & Associates becomes one of the leading permanent physician search firms in the nation, in terms of number of search assignments and placements.
In 1994 following McConnell Dowell’s decision to return to its core civil business, Hawkins was sold back into private ownership.
1994: Merritt Hawkins & Associates opens its Eastern Regional Office in Atlanta, Georgia.
1995: Merritt Hawkins & Associates is recognized by The Wall Street Journal and Medical Economics as the first physician search firm to post physician job opportunities on the Internet.
1996: Allied Consulting is established to meet the temporary allied health staffing needs of Merritt Hawkins & Associates' clients.
1998: Merritt Hawkins & Associates/The MHA Group earns the endorsement of over 20 healthcare organizations, the most of any physician search firm in the industry.
In August of 2000 the family decided to form Hawkins Personnel Group and no longer operate as a franchise.
McConnell family reinvest in Hawkins and by 2000 have a 100% shareholding.

2007: Merritt Hawkins executives co-author and publish the book Merritt Hawkins Guide to Physician Recruitment.
Established in 2008, Hawkins Melendrez, PC, fills a unique niche in Nevada’s legal landscape.
2008: Merritt Hawkins partners with The Physicians Foundation to conduct one of the largest physician surveys undertaken in the United States.
In 2009 the corporate officers and directors were restructured to promote future growth into new areas of business.
2011: Merritt Hawkins creates the first physician recruiting app in the industry, allowing physicians real time access to medical practice opportunity information and allowing users to instantly access a wide range of physician demographic and related data.
2012: Merritt Hawkins celebrates 25 years of continuous service to the healthcare industry.
Hawkins’ new Rosemount facility opened its doors on schedule on March 1, 2013.
After some construction to the space, Hawkins began business in the new space on April 29, 2013, shifting its corporate office to 2381 Rosegate in Roseville.
2013: In partnership with Richard “Buz” Cooper of the University of Pennsylvania, Merritt Hawkins develops its Hospital-Specific Physician Requirements Model, a demands-based method for determining community need for physicians.
2014: Merritt Hawkins releases its third Survey of Physician Appointment Wait Times revealing the time it takes to schedule a new patient physician appointment in 15 major metro markets.
In April 2017 Downer acquired specific Hawkins projects, agreed assets, the forward pipeline of work and employees.
2017: Merritt Hawkins celebrates 30 years of continuous service to the healthcare industry.
