POSITION SUMMARY:
Under limited supervision of the General Service Manager-Machinery, this position acts as a liaison between the dealership and Caterpillar. The Technical Communicator will communicate with Caterpillar and relay any pertinent information as needed to the customers and the dealership.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Keep personnel informed of the latest updates from Caterpillar by maintaining a Technical Library and distributing technical information within the organization.
Develop and maintain Caterpillar contacts to ensure a point of contact for all CAT product updates.
Provide excellent customer support that includes troubleshooting, providing logical and timely response to customer technical problems and questions, and representing our customers in relaying product concerns to Caterpillar.
Accurately provide timely information to Sales, Parts, and Service by meeting customer needs and minimizing or eliminating startup and operating problems, reducing rework, and verify any complaints by comparing operation with normal or specified operation.
Identify components likely to be involved using standard reference if given an operator's complaint. Gather and report all requested data including production codes if given a specific product failure. Identify the correct factory service engineering contact to resolve if given a specific product problem. Describe failure verbally and in writing if given a failed part.
Administer the appropriate Sales and Service literature by identifying application zone and describing critical factors and recommendations to factory or user as needed.
Will go out in the field as needed to ensure the latest updated information is communicated to the Parts and Sales departments.
Determine cause of wear, failure, reusability, and salvage methods on worn or failed parts.
Implement effect of specific application or user maintenance practices on performance.
Make inspections and generate reports of deficiencies for user or for factory.
Measure scheduled oil sampling results and makes recommendations to user as needed.
Take into consideration Dealer and factory liability when reporting and investigating an accident.
Review warranty claims and shipment of iron if needed and determines applicability of Caterpillar warranty.
Provide product information to Caterpillar, assisting CAT in justifying change, developing and maintaining contacts with product groups, assist in product testing, and providing timely feedback to product groups.
Administer and maintain ongoing log of product problems and actions that were needed to resolve.
Provide technical assistance and training for the customer.
Contribute to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
Perform other duties as assigned by management.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
Must have a high school diploma or equivalent, or can provide verification of all formal classroom study or hands on experience related to heavy equipment repairs.
AA degree from a trade school preferred.
Must have two (2) years general office experience.
Minimum five (5) years experience working in a Caterpillar Dealer service department as a technician and technical correspondents/field service.
Must have a valid CA Class C Driver's License with a clean driving record.
Must have working knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite.
Proficient with Caterpillar service computer programs.
Demonstrate excellent communication skills both verbal and written.
Ability to work in team environment and possess positive attitude.
Available to travel and attend out of state meetings as required.
Ability to multitask and establish priorities.
Ability to maintain a flexible attitude and approach towards assignments and successfully operate under ambiguous guidelines.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Walking: Moves about on foot often through uneven terrain.
Handling: Picks up items, helps or works with hands.
Lifting: Up to 60lbs. Daily; frequent exertion.
Reaching: Extends hands and arms in any direction.

Driving: Drives company vehicle to and from jobsites.

Temp/Weather: Works indoors and outdoors with variations of temperature and weather conditions.

POSITION SUMMARY: The Engine Service Tech 2 - Truck Shop troubleshoots mechanical problems in Caterpillar and allied products. With minimal supervision, the Engine ServiceTechnician 2 - Truck Shop performs duties as assigned by management in the repair, maintenance and/or rebuilding of equipment in the service shop or field, in a safe, efficient and capable manner in the least amount of labor hours necessary and without re-work. Besides performing mechanical repair as directed, the Engine ServiceTechnician 2 - Truck Shop also estimates work orders and prepares written quotes for submission to the Lead Person and/or Service Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Troubleshoots all Caterpillar and related systems.
Uses all test and diagnostic equipment available to make adjustments to truck engines and systems.
Makes warranty recommendations.
Performs minor welding, fabrication, plumbing alignment and D.C. electric repairs.
Guides/supervises lower-level technicians in the repairs of trucks, Caterpillar and allied engines.
Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
Must have a valid Class C Driver's License with a clean driving record.
Must have a valid California Class “B” driver's license, if assigned vehicle requires.
Three to seven (3 to 7) years of experience in the repair of on-highway trucks and buses.
Expertise in all phases of on-highway truck service operation.
Full and positive knowledge of the Caterpillar product line and allied products.
Must have a high school diploma or equivalent, or can provide verification of all formal classroom study or hands on experience related to equipment repairs.
Furnish all hand tools required to repair, test and diagnose hydraulic, air, power train, electrical, and electronic systems on all makes of trucks and Caterpillar engines.
NOTE: Some high dollar value tooling is supplied by Hawthorne Machinery Co.

POSITION SUMMARY: As a technician, with minimal supervision, the Machine ServiceTechnician 2 - Field is responsible for providing high quality repairs on Caterpillar and allied equipment. The Machine ServiceTechnician 2 - Field will diagnose and troubleshoot engines, powertrains, electrical, and hydraulic systems; experience with cat diagnostic equipment, Cat repair tooling, rigging, and blocking equipment is essential. Due to multiple projects the Machine ServiceTechnician 2 - Field will be assigned, this position requires planning and organization skills with a particular emphasis on controlling job costs. The Machine ServiceTechnician 2 - Field will investigate, analyze, and identify issues in order to make recommendations for the appropriate repairs. Our technicians work with a variety of people, communication skills that include strong interpersonal skills, effective writing, basic computer skills, and ability to respond to the lead technicians/management in a positive, caring, and timely manner is required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Analyze and diagnose equipment malfunctions.
Remove and install parts, disassemble, and assemble components, and test and adjust assemblies with minimal supervision.
Perform Caterpillar updates as directed by Caterpillar, Inc.
Analyze all Caterpillar and allied product equipment systems and components for proper operation based on theory of design.
Effectively communicate with peers, leads and other staff members.
Organize a job in a logical and economical sequence.
Utilize Cat Interact and Servicelink (computer programs) and other online tools as required.
Order parts through DBS (Dealer Business System).
Enter your labor time daily (DBS).
Perform assigned work within the communicated time quoted/flat rated.
Conduct customer training in proper use of Caterpillar equipment as needed.
Complete assigned jobs to meet flat rate times with minimal to no rework.
Write service reports that accurately document diagnosis and repairs performed on a daily basis.
Attend toolbox meetings as required.
Adhere to all company policies.
Follow contamination control and OSHA/MSHA rules and regulations.
Guide/mentor/train technicians with less expertise in the repairs of Caterpillar machines and systems.
Perform other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
High school diploma or equivalent
Prefer to have one of the following.
Five to eight (5-8) years of experience in the repair of Caterpillar or other heavy equipment products.
Successful completion of Level One Technician program
General knowledge of basic hand tools, air tools, precision measuring tools and instruments, laptops, diagnostic software and cranes/rigging equipment.
Ability to provide accurate information to lead/supervisor for quoting.
Ability to adapt to changes in the work environment;
Manages competing demands;
Changes approach or method to best fit the situation;
Deals with frequent change, delays, or unexpected events.
Must be able to obtain a passing score for the crane qualification test performed by a qualified Hawthorne trainer for this position.
Ability to work unsupervised efficiently and be part of a team environment.
Must be able to pass the Lock Out / Tag Out & Forklift certification class provided by a qualified Hawthorne trainer for this position.
Perform the position with pride in professionalism while following Hawthorne's code of conduct.
Possess basic computer knowledge and ability to use service software required in position.
Must have valid California Driver's License with a clean record.
Shop Requirements: Valid California Class “C” driver's license.
Field Requirements: Valid California Class “B” driver's license, if assigned vehicle is required.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTS

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Assist customers that are arriving or picking up equipment from the location.
Check in equipment in and do a safety check to see that machine is in the same condition as it was rented.
Check out equipment by assisting customers with loading of equipment and provide any instructions that are needed regarding attachments or other items.
After rental return initial inspection, check to ensure machine is in good working condition.
Prepare machine for rental by cleaning and checking all fluids and that safety features are working properly.
Responsible for adding oil, airing tires, replacing or repairing minor parts, and/or accessories on equipment.
Red tag equipment that need repairs.
Work with rental coordinators and shop on scheduling of repairs.
Ensure machines are rent ready condition (steam cleaned and clean) then place on ready line ensuring proper location and in a uniform position.
Assist drivers with loading and unloading, unchaining equipment as needed.
Other duties as assigned.
SKILLS
Ability to read and write instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
Ability to effectively present information to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide.
Ability to fulfill the essential functions in a consistent state of alertness and safe manner.
Ability to apply to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral instructions.
Ability to problem solve involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
High school or GED and/or Entry Level to Four years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and use hands and fingers to handle and feel objects, tools, and controls and to reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to climb or balance and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
The employee must regularly fit and/or move up to 50 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

COMPENSATION
Pay Range: $19.00 - $21.00 Hourly
Wage depends on knowledge, skills and ability to perform the responsibilities of the job.
