Hazelnut Growers of Oregon company history timeline

1983

Hazelnut Growers was established in 1983 and has a rich history of evolving to better serve growers and the customers who purchase their hazelnuts.

1989

In 1989, the Oregon legislature crowned the hazelnut (Corylus avellana) as the state’s official nut.

The hazelnut became Oregon’s official State Nut in 1989.

2010

The 2010’s saw a couple of key events that encouraged them to begin looking outside their traditional supply chains in Turkey, and that illustrate the compelling role that a more developed US Hazelnut industry could play.

2011

2011- After decades of intense research and breeding, EFB-resistant varieties are released to growers for the first time, thus turning the tide against Eastern Filbert Blight and kickstarting the current industry boom.

2014

The first of these was a historically severe frost in the spring of 2014 in Turkey, which decimated roughly a third of that country’s annual harvest.

2015

For starters, as of 2015, only 20% of the hazelnuts consumed in the US were produced domestically, and both government, university extension, and farmer support programs have begun to elevate their focus on the crop to fill this gap.

2016

Wilco became involved when they merged with Hazelnut Growers of Oregon in 2016.

2018

2018- Oregon hazelnuts surpassed 50,000 tons harvested for the first time!

The former Cornelius, Oregon plant closed and relocated to the new, state-of-the-art plant in Donald, Oregon the summer of 2018.

2019

Within several years, in 2019, Ferrero was also forced to respond to various exposés of child labor in Turkish hazelnut production that ultimately went to be used in their products.
