Job SummaryWe are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Senior Underwriter with strong expertise in Administrative Services Only (ASO), Stop Loss, and pharmacy risk evaluation to join our dynamic team. This role is critical in evaluating risk, pricing strategies, and ensuring sustainable growth across our self-funded product lines.
Job Duties
Calculates premium rate proposals and develops product portfolios for new client groups and renewal business. Contributes to the achievement of the financial and marketing objectives for the thorough assessment of group risk, the expected cost to deliver services, the expected marketability and competitiveness of health care services that will result in profitable enrollment. Uses actuarial data in standard application of various rating methodologies and formulas and identifies potential areas for application of underwriting judgment. Confers with management to identify and develop methods and procedures to obtain greater efficiency. Provides support to Management relative to financial forecasting, profitability and expense analysis, and assigned special projects.
Analyze the risk of a group and calculate premium rates for new and renewal clients adhering to regulatory requirements, underwriting guidelines and pricing strategies to achieve target financial results.
Analyze claims experience, demographics, benefit plans, group attributes and competitor data. Applies underwriting judgment as appropriate.
Complete Request for Proposals providing explanations of rate action, configuration of benefits and market position to sales, client, broker, or consultant. Organizes proposal questionnaire responses to consulting firms.
Presents key accounts to all levels of management providing an explanation of premium rating strategies, product offerings and market position specific to the account.
Conducts conference calls with the clients and sales to interpret the renewal and new business proposal rating, negotiating premium reductions as part of these calls.
Assists with designing and implementing rating models. Recommends measures to improve efficiency and ensure accuracy.
Acts as a department resource for co-workers, sales, and inter-departmental projects
Assists in preparing various management reports to analyze the financial risk for the health plan. Utilizes a high level of experience in Excel and reporting programs for special analysis

Underwriting Specialist Basic Qualifications:

This job serves as the single-point-of-contact for sales teams and assigned customers, delivering insights and recommendations to sales in order to aid customer acquisition/retention while maintaining performance goals. This incumbent will collaborate with cross functional team members on client-level quotes and function as a trusted adviser by providing financial and risk management support to sales as well as strategic insight.
**ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES**
+ Understand department and the company'sstrategic goals and competitive position and drives client-level results towards these ends. Actively work with Sales team to manage portfolio of clients towards financial and business targets, e.g. membership, revenue, margin, etc.
+ Proactively draw insights from quote details, client understanding and regional insights to deliver best-possible recommendation to Sales. State and maintain independent perspective, including under pressure from more senior individuals, identifying opportunities and concerns.
+ Responsible for portfolio of clients through underwriting engagement, from identification through documentation of final sold-contract details
+ Assess risk by looking at various risk measures such as risk scores, demographic analysis, and turnover considerations.
+ Serve as the accountable owner for all quotes delivered to sales partners. Develop a perspective on each client package deliverable. Clearly and confidently communicates Underwriting's position on the risk profile of each client
+ Identify tool improvement needs and communicates needs to Product Development teams
+ Maintain accurate book management details including concession budget
+ Other duties as assigned or requested.

The Manager, Underwriting of Association Health Plans & Small Group collaborates with key leaders, consulting on technical underwriting and detailed, complex concepts and implementations while engaging the technical expertise of Underwriters, Actuaries and other Business partners both internal and external to the Plan. Oversees underwriting risk, analysis, pricing models, process and procedures for our Association Health Plans and Small Group commercial fully insured line of business. Maintains a high degree of efficiency and accuracy in all areas of responsibility. Assures that both internal and external service standards are tracked, and that there is effective team management of Service Level Agreements (SLAs). Facilitates a smooth integration with other functional areas within the Plan.

Required Qualifications:
+ Bachelor's Degree Finance, Mathematics, or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience
+ 5 years Management experience in underwriting.
+ 5 years Experienced in developing processes, guidelines, procedures and policies in collaboration with other impacted areas.
+ 5 years Extensive Underwriting and consulting experience in large group (including self-funded and other funding arrangements and association business) and Medicare product lines.

Requirements
Prescreening & Prequalification:
Enter merchant application data accurately into internal systems
Retrieve and evaluate credit information from multiple credit sources
Review and analyze bank statements and credit reports
Underwriting Analysis & Decision-Making:
Assess all gathered information to determine business eligibility
Identify whether sufficient information exists to make decisions
Request additional documentation as needed
Make and document decisions to properly status an application to pend, decline, or approve based on underwriting criteria
Utilize the underwriting matrix and other company policies to guide decisions
Exercise judgment using client data, credit bureau information, reference checks, and other third-party resources
Collaboration & Communication:
Partner effectively with the underwriting and risk teams:
Identify and report any questionable business activities to the appropriate departments
Collaborate with merchants, ISOs, sales representatives, and internal operations teams
Application & Account Review:
Conduct reference checks with outside vendors as required
Perform quality assurance reviews post-transmission to ensure accuracy and completeness
Additional Responsibilities:
Provide secondary support by answering and directing incoming phone calls
Deliver excellent customer service to both internal and external partners
Perform other duties as assigned to support departmental and organizational objectives
Qualifications:
Associate or Bachelor's degree, or equivalent combination of education and work experience
Minimum of 3 years of experience in financial services, underwriting, or credit analysis
Strong ability to interpret and analyze credit reports and financial data

Proficient data entry and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities
