1853

In the spring of 1853, a school was opened on the Robinson’s land.

1860

In 1860, the first public schoolhouse was built.

1888

In 1888, the Robinson Grade School was built for $600.

1911

In 1911, the city’s students moved to the Daugherty Brothers office building at Marine and Ocean and later to the basement of the community church on Highland Avenue.

1912

The city of Manhattan Beach, which had previously been under the umbrella of the city of Los Angeles, was incorporated in December 1912.

1913

The first trustees of the Manhattan Beach City School District were elected by the people on April 4, 1913.

1916

For the first time since 1916, Robinson students did not attend school at that site near the corner of Old Robinson Road and West Lyndale.

1930

Robinson Elementary School opened in the fall of 1930.

1938

Doctor Robinson married the former Miss Blanche Grogan on June 5, 1938.

1939

Grand View opened its doors for the fall term of 1939.

1946

In October 1946, the board began planning for additional school sites and administrative facilities.

1950

Until Mira Costa High School was built in 1950, the students attended Redondo’s high school.

1951

The Robinson Grade School was becoming crowded, so in 1951, an addition was built.

1964

On three separate occasions, beginning in 1964, initiatives to unify the Manhattan Beach elementary schools with area high schools were placed before the community for vote.

1973

She was named as the director of health services in 1973 while serving as the school nurse for Jersey Village.

1974

In 1974, she became the full-time director of health services.

1988

Robinson Elementary School opened in 1988, serving grades three through five.

1990

By the 1990’s, the newly minted Manhattan Beach Unified School District realized the need to relieve overcrowding within the District as well as modernize their existing schools, most of which were already nearing the half-century mark.

Other than the Cafetorium and other smaller buildings, no other school was built until 1990.

1992

Finally in November of 1992, Proposition V was approved by the voters; and a split unification of the South Bay Union High School District was enacted, creating both Redondo Beach Unified School District and Manhattan Beach Unified School District.

1996

The voters of Manhattan Beach approved Measure A in 1996, by two-thirds required margin, for $47.3 million for these much-needed improvements.

2000

The City of Manhattan Beach approved Measure M in 2000 in the amount of $26 million.

2001

Eleven years later (2001), RISD opened two new campuses.

2008

In 2008, the residents of Manhattan Beach approved Measure BB for $67.5 million with 62% of the votes.

2014

In 2014, Robinson partnered with KECC to open the Robinson Pre-School classroom which welcomes four year olds for their important year before Kindergarten.

2016

On November 8, 2016, the voters of Manhattan Beach approved two bond measures.

In the fall of 2016, the new Robinson Intermediate opened on Old Robinson Road (near the intersection with Foster). Grades 4th through 6th are served in the new school.

2018

On June 5, 2018 the citizens of Manhattan Beach voted on Measure MB, a local funding measure in the form of a parcel tax.
