That began to change when President Lyndon B. Johnson signed The Civil Rights Act of 1964, the landmark anti-discrimination law that, among its provisions, denied federal funds to segregated schools.
During the winter term in 1965, 250 black students in Lexington, the county seat of Holmes, and 125 students from nearby Tchula asked their principals to persuade the all-white school board to obey Brown v.
In 1965, the year black parents filed their case, Holmes County parents organized to help open three private schools for white children.
A special three-judge panel of the Southern District of Mississippi bundled Holmes with more than 30 other cases in 1968.
During the 1968-69 school year, almost 80 percent of the operating costs for three of the academies in the county were met by state tuition grants, according to a lawsuit challenging the program.
In 1985, Holmes began building facilities and offering classes at both Ridgeland and Grenada.
The State Board for Community and Junior Colleges (now the Mississippi Community College Board) approved the name change in December 1988.
Holmes Junior College became Holmes Community College beginning with the 1989 school year after the Board of Trustees decided that having “community” in the name would more accurately reflect the comprehensive and multi-faceted mission of the modern two-year college.
The Attala Center in Kosciusko opened its doors in 1997 to meet the needs of the residents in Attala and surrounding counties.
In 2003, when Robert Clark retired, his son Bryant Clark ran for his father’s old seat.
During the 2018-19 school year, Holmes County residents paid a higher rate of property taxes than the state average, but the district still raised about $2 million less locally than other districts of a similar size.
