JOB DESCRIPTION:
+ Ensures safe and efficient operation of steam plant boilers (up to 4,000 BHP) and Chillers (up to 2000 tons) and other equipment associated with the steam and chiller plants in accordance with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) codes and standards.
+ Serves as a back-up to the Manager, Plant Operations, and trains new Plant Operators on the operation of the Emory steam and chiller plant systems.
+ Operates and controls utility panels that monitor equipment to maintain utility services to the plants.
+ Maintains and records entries in logbooks, operating logs, and regulatory reports.
+ Oversees operations associated with an electrical power distribution panel.
+ Reads and interprets OEM Manuals; reads precision instruments.
+ Performs minor mechanical piping repairs.
+ Performs preventive and corrective maintenance in accordance with engineering practices on utility systems which include but are not limited to the following: compressed air, CO2, steam boilers, water purification, fuel oil, chillers, and glycol.
+ Samples, tests, analyzes, mixes and injects chemicals to maintain boiler waterside conditions and blow downs. Inspects the steam plant to check meters, charts, pressures and temperatures.
+ Ensures a clean boiler room to prevent fire hazards.
+ Operates hand and power tools.
+ Takes the necessary precautions, in keeping with OSHA standards and other applicable federal and state regulations, when working with hazardous chemicals and materials and power equipment.
+ Uses personal protective equipment as required.
+ Drives utility vehicles to and from work sites and safeguards against vandalism and theft.
+ Performs other related responsibilities as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
+ A high school diploma or equivalent and six years of experience in a multi-boiler high pressure steam plant.
+ Holds a Second Class Power Engineers License issued by the National Institute for the Uniform Licensing of Power Engineers, Inc. (NIULPE).
+ A working knowledge of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) codes for power boilers.
+ Some positions in this classification may require a valid Georgia driver's license and an insurable driving record.
+ All candidates must be capable of frequently lifting and carrying 50 pounds and be capable of pushing or pulling up to 150 pounds properly.

Primary Function / Primary Goals / Objectives:
The Energy Center Operator is responsible for providing all utilities for the Tipp City site, including electric, water, steam, compressed air, refrigeration, air conditioning and fire protection and to operate and perform routine maintenance on Energy Center equipment. The incumbent must be able to perform all duties with minimal or no supervision.
Major Responsibilities:
Responsible for implementing and maintaining the effectiveness of the quality system.
Operates Energy Center equipment and related control systems; i.e., gas boilers, air compressors, chillers, cooling towers, water treatment systems, fire protection system, and
Waste Water Pre-treatment plant
Performs various chemical tests on steam and water systems such as hardness, conductance, alkalinity, pH, etc. Using the test results, maintains proper control of different steam and water systems to assure efficient Energy Center operation and provide high quality utilities for the site.
Performs routine maintenance in Energy Center systems and equipment such as boilers, chillers, air compressors, steam systems, water softeners, pumps. and HVAC systems
Uses computer-based DMACS control system for both utility and HVAC control systems, and Lotus Notes.
Other work-related duties as assigned. Rotating weekends.
Education:
High school diploma/GED,
MUST HAVE: 4 years of work related energy center operations and maintenance experience and a State of Ohio Stationary Engineer's License or Ohio High Pressure Boiler License.
Experience is required due to nature of the staffing schedule currently in use at Tipp City where around the clock operation's coverage is achieved with four operators on a rotating shift basis. Due to their schedule, the operator is the only maintenance/operations person on site for about 70% of the time, including the night shifts and weekends. An experienced operator is required due to the lack of current staffing that would allow for an inexperienced operator to be adequately training to operate safely alone.
Background:
Four years related experience is defined as operating and maintaining energy center type equipment such as boilers, refrigeration, air compressors, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and electronic control systems in a similar environment or performing tasks similar to, or the same as, those required in this position. Must be able to diagnose and repair the problem without shutting the site down or jeopardizing site operations such as MIS or R&D.
Accountability / Scope/Budget:
Proper operation of the utility systems at Tipp City are essential in operating the equipment efficiently and safely. Improper operation can have an adverse effect on the site utility budget and could result in costly damage to the equipment.
On a continuous basis, this position must coordinate with all site operations the usage of steam, water, compressed air and any other utility systems to avoid utility shortages or outages that could stop or jeopardize their operation. Works under minimal or no direct supervision.

WHAT YOU'LL DO
Responsible for implementing and maintaining the effectiveness of the quality and safety system.

**Education:**
