IDEA.org company history timeline

1968

The IDEA Student Ratings System originated at Kansas State University during the 1968-69 school year.

1975

With help from the W. K. Kellogg Foundation, The IDEA Center was established in 1975 and the IDEA Student Ratings system was made available to other colleges and universities.

1998

During their stints as Teach For America corps members, Tom Torkelson and JoAnn Gama founded the IDEA Academy as an after school program in Donna, TX in 1998.

2000

IDEA enjoyed quick success, and the state of Texas granted a charter to IDEA in 2000.

2001

In 2001, The IDEA Center received its 501(c)(3) nonprofit status to more effectively pursue its mission, serving hundreds of institutions of higher education.

2007

The flagship campus in Donna graduated its first class of seniors in 2007, sending 100% of its graduating students to college.

2011

It wasn’t until 2011 that the behemoth toymaker LEGO acknowledged girls’ desire to build with bricks, even though the company had long before made a seemingly effortless pivot to co-branding, video games, and major motion pictures.

2020

In the 2020-21 school year, IDEA graduated more than 1,407 seniors from 19 campuses, and for the 15th consecutive year, 100% of our seniors were accepted to college.
