1803

The original St Joseph's Church was built on the site of the current basilica in 1803, and was the first non-mission parish built in California.

1840

Upper California was part of the Diocese of Sonora, Mexico, during the early days and, after 1840, it was under Bishop Francisco Garcia Diego, the first bishop of Alta and Baja (Upper and Lower) California.

1875

The third church was destroyed by fire in 1875, and a temporary fourth church was built a few blocks away while the fifth and current church was being constructed.

1915

The original St Leo the Great church was built in 1915 and was named for Pope Leo I. The first mass at St Leo's Chapel was celebrated by the Rev.

1918

After becoming the fourth bishop of Galveston in 1918, Bishop Christopher Byrne expanded the church ministry among African Americans and Mexican Americans in Houston and made local clergy a priority, ordaining about seventy priests who were Texans.

1933

At the time of his death in 1933, the clinic was regarded as one of the largest charity operations in Houston, serving 1,000 patients a month.

1953

On Christmas Eve 1953, Father Manning celebrated the first mass in the new (and current) church building, which he was instrumental in helping to build.

1959

On June 29, 1959 San Jose Catholic was formally established as a parish with

1961

In 1961, with the arrival of the Sisters of Mercy from Ireland, San Jose Catholic School welcomed its first students.

1968

The shrine was completed in late 1968 and the first Mass was celebrated on the outdoor altar on Thanksgiving Day.

1977

Monsignor John Lenihan, who was appointed pastor in 1977, continued to foster the growing community of San Jose Parish.

1981

In 1981, a major renovation project was begun at the church, which was to become the cathedral for the new Roman Catholic Bishop of San Jose.

1990

Under his direction, the school was expanded and later a new Spanish style church was constructed and dedicated on November 9, 1990.

1998

Bishop McGrath was formally received into the diocese at a Mass of Welcome, September 17, 1998.

2009

To serve the needs of approximately 1500 families, a new Parish Center was completed in 2009 which provided much needed office space and meeting facilities for various parish ministries.

2015

In 2015, both St Leo the Great Parish and School celebrated their centennial year.

2018

Oscar Cantú was appointed by Pope Francis as Coadjutor Bishop of San Jose, on July 11, 2018 and celebrated his Mass of Welcome on September 28, 2018 and became Bishop of the San José after Bishop McGrath’s retirement was made public on May 1 by the Holy See.
