**Primary Objective:** This is a paid, part-time role designed for students pursuing a two-year technical degree. The program typically spans 1-2 semesters or longer with ~25-30 hours/week during the academic term. Students will work alongside MTS Field Service Technicians and Engineers at customer sites across the metro-Detroit region to:
+ Understand fundamentals of servo-hydraulic and electromechanical systems
+ Develop core diagnostic and troubleshooting skills
+ Gain exposure to real world customer service environments
+ Practice hands-on calibration and repair under experienced mentorship
+ Strengthen communication and interpersonal skills by working directly with customers and cross-functional teams

**Major Areas of Accountability:**
**Installation & Commissioning**
+ Assist in setting up and configuring equipment at customer sites.
+ Learn safety protocols, compliance standards, and the MTS Corporate and Field Service Quality System.
**Preventive & Corrective Maintenance**
+ Support routine inspections and repairs including calibrations and diagnosing equipment problems to the sub-sections of the systems (i.e. controllers, hydraulics, data acquisition systems, transducers, grips, fixtures, etc.
+ Document service activities and learn diagnostic tools.
**Customer Support & Training**
+ Shadow service engineers during customer interactions to learn the basics about assigned customer base and business activities to optimize customer satisfaction, efficiency of operation, revenue generation, margin levels, and service contract performance.
+ Help deliver basic guidance and support to MTS customers.
**Technical Support & Remote Services**
+ Participate in remote diagnostics and troubleshooting.
+ Collaborate with technical teams to resolve service tickets.
**Other duties and special projects as assigned.**
**Qualifications:**
+ Willingness to travel to local customer sites in the metro Detroit area as well as for optional rotation(s) at Headquarters in Eden Prairie, MN.
+ Must possess a valid driver's license and able to obtain automobile/liability coverage.
+ Experience in support and service preferred.
+ Good oral and written English communication skills.
+ Basic MS-Office computer and software skills.
+ Ability to work with a high degree of personal discipline.
+ Problem solving and analytical skills.

**Compensation Information:**
Hourly rate for this position ranges from $19 - $26 dependent on relevant education and experience.

This position will work with the R&D Formulation Engineering team to evaluate new tubular, solid wire, and stick electrode arc welding consumables, evaluate reformulations of existing products, and to help troubleshoot issues as necessary. This job is on the Troy campus, in the Engineering and Testing facility.
**Essential Functions**
+ Perform welding evaluations and provide feedback (verbal and/or written) to the product formulation engineer. Evaluations consist of:
+ Weld test formulas using bead-on-flat plate, and fillet welds in all positions.
+ Welding chemical analysis test pads (chem pads)
+ Welding standard multi-pass groove weld test plates in all positions
+ Must be able to articulate what is observed while welding with respect to the arc and transfer characteristics, spatter, bead appearance, etc. and express how different products perform in a clear, meaningful manner.
+ At a minimum, must be capable of welding in all positions with FCAW and SMAW processes.
+ Must be willing and able to develop expertise with all arc welding processes (SMAW, GMAW, MCAW, FCAW, and SAW), and with all 'families' of products in the Hobart Brothers portfolio.
+ Must be familiar with common welding codes AWS, ASME, and standard industry practices (welding techniques, welding procedure specifications, pre- and post-heating requirements, etc.).
+ Must be adaptable, and able to weld by following welding procedure requirements.
+ Willingness to travel (5% of time) as needed for customer visits, field testing, VOCs, etc.
+ Must learn to perform more specialized test methods and procedures.
+ These methods may include robotic welding systems, fume generation tests, deposition rate tests, hardness testing, hot- and cold-cracking tests, diffusible hydrogen testing, etc.
**Minimum Qualifications**
+ High School Diploma or equivalent required.
+ Graduates of the 9-month welding program at HIWT or equivalent vocational training program preferred or extended form of in-house apprenticeship.
+ Must complete a welding skill level assessment.
+ Excellent time management and prioritization skills.
+ Must be a team player with excellent communication skills.
+ Must display strong initiative and self-motivation through ownership and independent completion of tasks.

Primary Responsibilities and Technical Skills
* Program Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM) for various applications including FPA, OpEx projects, process control, set-up and audit inspection, and part/tool troubleshooting for all production parts used in dishwashers.
* Draft and present final reports in the appropriate mode to meet customer needs.
* Maintain laboratory equipment and facilities, coordinating with outside services as necessary.
* Collaborate with engineering and manufacturing teams to troubleshoot dimensional failures and determine root causes of non-conformance.
* Serve as a division expert for reading and understanding product blueprints, especially Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
* Coordinate applicable equipment calibrations with outside suppliers and generate related Purchase Orders (POs) and packing lists.
* Maintain, understand, and update all programs on gauging CMMs located throughout the division.
* Understand and explain blueprint symbols, dimensions, features, notes, and revision levels in layman terms.
Required Knowledge and Abilities
* Basic mechanical aptitude, including the ability to read and interpret dimensions, tolerances, and assembly notes.
* Understanding of basic problem-solving skills, including statistical analysis, to drive root cause identification and problem solving.
* Ability to use shop mathematics, adjustable measuring devices, complicated drawings, or specialized training.
* Ability to plan and perform unusual and difficult work where only general methods are available, and make decisions involving considerable judgment and initiative.
Tools, Equipment, and Systems Experience
* Experience with Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM).
* Familiarity with various metrology tools such as height gauges, surface plates, optical comparators, plug gauges, and thread gauges.
* Experience with PC DMIS and Pro E.
* Proficiency in Statistical Process Control, Windows, I-Notes, Word, and Excel.
* Familiarity with Measurement System Evaluation (MSE), and DOE assistant.
Training and Licensing
Requires training up to and including four years.

* Must be willing and able to develop expertise with all arc welding processes (SMAW, GMAW, MCAW, FCAW, and SAW), and with all 'families' of products in the Hobart Brothers portfolio.
* Must be familiar with common welding codes AWS, ASME, and standard industry practices (welding techniques, welding procedure specifications, pre- and post-heating requirements, etc.).
* Must be adaptable, and able to weld by following welding procedure requirements.
* Willingness to travel (5% of time) as needed for customer visits, field testing, VOCs, etc.
* Must learn to perform more specialized test methods and procedures.
* These methods may include robotic welding systems, fume generation tests, deposition rate tests, hardness testing, hot- and cold-cracking tests, diffusible hydrogen testing, etc.
Minimum Qualifications
* High School Diploma or equivalent required.
* Graduates of the 9-month welding program at HIWT or equivalent vocational training program preferred or extended form of in-house apprenticeship.
* Must complete a welding skill level assessment.
* Excellent time management and prioritization skills.
* Must be a team player with excellent communication skills.
* Must display strong initiative and self-motivation through ownership and independent completion of tasks.
* Maintain a safe, clean, well-organized workspace and perform housekeeping duties following cleaning checklist as necessary.
