Conducts periodic review for possible storage of older files; prepares files to be closed. Processes bills; proofs billing sheets; reviews and edits bills. Works closely with administrative support staff; proofs documents returned from word processing; ensures that attorney time sheets are provided to appropriate person in a timely manner. Performs legal assistant duties as requested. Acts as coverage for receptionist and receptionist duties, when needed. Other duties as assigned. Ability to proofread typed material for grammatical, typographical or spelling errors. Collaborate with administrative departments such as reception, accounting, information technology, marketing, and records to support Firm operations. Provide overflow assistance with typing, scanning, copying, and other clerical tasks as needed. Coordinate and execute timely e-filing of legal documents with various courts and agencies. Qualifications, Skills and Abilities Required: The ideal candidate for the Litigation Legal Assistant role will meet the following qualifications and possess the necessary skills to succeed in a fast-paced legal environment: Strong written communication skills, including the ability to proofread and edit legal correspondence and documents for grammar, spelling, and typographical accuracy. Basic math proficiency to perform routine calculations and verify numerical data, typically acquired through a high school diploma or equivalent. 3-5 years of relevant legal administrative experience, with a working knowledge of law office procedures, document formatting, and legal terminology. Proficiency in typing and transcription, including the ability to accurately type at a minimum of 70 words per minute from dictation or draft. Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and manage competing deadlines under time constraints. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally with attorneys, clients, and team members across all levels. Comfortable communicating by phone and email with courtesy, discretion, and professionalism. High attention to detail and accuracy, with the ability to manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously. Proven ability to manage workflow, delegate when appropriate, and ensure timely completion of assignments. Ability to maintain focus and efficiency while managing a high volume of information and deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Willingness to work extended or irregular hours when necessary to meet case deadlines or support attorney needs. We are seeking a team of highly organized, self‐driven, and resilient individuals dedicated to our mission. The Criminal Defense Practice at NDS Detroit will represent residents of Wayne County who are charged with felony crimes and cannot afford to hire a lawyer. Clients are represented by teams composed of lawyers, investigators, social workers, client advocates, and team administrators. NDS adheres to a client‐centered approach to representation that emphasizes a heightened responsiveness to clients' needs prior to arrest, while a case is pending, and after the case concludes. NDS is committed to addressing the comprehensive legal and social service needs of clients while treating each client with dignity and respect. Our Detroit office is currently accepting applications for law student internships for the summer of 2026. Interns gain experience assisting attorneys in preliminary examinations, motions hearings, and trials. Interns are assigned to a team and work with other team members, social workers and investigators in the holistic model. Graduates of our internship program often work as public defenders after law school, either at NDS or as an advocate of holistic defense elsewhere. Responsibilities 1.
